New Delhi:
A sharp
political confrontation
erupted on Friday over alleged remarks concerning farmers and a proposed trade understanding with the US, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (
BJP
) and Congress trading strong words over a privilege motion and claims of misinformation. Union Minister Giriraj Singh dismissed the Opposition’s allegations as baseless. “What farmers’ issue? Lies, just like Rafale, are spreading confusion among people,” he said.
Referring to statements made by the Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal, Union Minister Singh asserted that there would be “no compromise on farmers’ interests”. “Then what else is this if not spreading misinformation? They want to create confusion in the country; they want to incite a civil war in the nation,” he alleged. Union Minister Singh also said that those raising the issue should not only face a privilege motion but that a legal case should also be considered. “No joint statement has be…

The government says dairy, poultry, and GM crops remain protected.
India’s largest farmer groups are moving ahead with nationwide protests this week, as worries persist over whether New Delhi has made excessive concessions in agriculture under an interim trade deal with the US.
The pushback comes as limited details of the framework agreement begin to emerge, fuelling anxiety among farm unions about the long-term impact on domestic producers.

Farmers urged to unite against ‘anti-farmer policies’, India-US Free Trade Agreement
Andhra Pradesh Rythu Sangham State president V. Krishnayya called upon the farmers to unite and prepare for a sustained struggle against what he termed “anti-farmer policies” of the Central government and the proposed India-U.S. Free Trade Agreement (FTA), which he said would adversely affect the country’s agricultural sector.
Speaking after unveiling posters for the 23rd State conference of the A.P. Rythu Sangham at the CITU district office in Eluru on Tuesday, Mr. Krishnayya said farmers must remain vigilant to safeguard agriculture and protect their livelihoods. The programme was presided over by district president Katta Bhaskara Rao.
Mr. Krishnayya alleged that several policy initiatives of the Centre, including the Seed Bill, New Fertiliser Policy, Electricity Act reforms and changes in agricultural marketing systems, were detrimental to farmers’ interests and would accelerate the corporatisation of agriculture.
Expressing concern over the proposed India-U.S. FTA, he claimed that large-scale imp…

The Samyukt Kisan Morcha announces mass protests and burning of effigies of Prime Minister Modi and US President Donald Trump
NEW DELHI –
The Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) on Tuesday launched a blistering attack on the Narendra Modi government, accusing it of selling out Indian farmers to US imperial interests by agreeing to a zero-per cent import tariff on American goods, particularly agricultural produce. Terming the move a “historic betrayal of the peasantry”, the farmers’ joint platform announced a nationwide general strike on February 12, accompanied by mass protests and the burning of effigies of Prime Minister Modi and US President Donald Trump.
In a statement, SKM said the decision marks a complete reversal of Prime Minister Modi’s own declaration from the Red Fort on August 15, 2025, when he claimed he was “personally ready to pay a heavy price to protect the interests of farmers.”
“Today, that promise lies in tatters,” SKM said, accusing the prime minister of s…

Confronting State Violence: Lessons from India's Farmer Protests
Smita Narula

In December 2021, following a year of sustained mass protests, farmers in India forced the repeal of three controversial Farm Laws that attempted to deregulate India’s agricultural sector in service of corporate interests. Farmers feared that the laws would dismantle price supports for key crops, jeopardize their livelihoods, and facilitate a corporate takeover of India’s agrarian economy. This Article situates India’s historic farmer protests in the context of the country’s longstanding agrarian crisis and the corporate capture of agriculture worldwide. I argue that the protests arose in response not only to the Farm Laws, but also to decades of state-sponsored ecological and economic violence that have relegated millions of Indian farmers to a state of precarity and desperation. I further argue that the protests hold key insights for social movements around the globe, and for the future of food in India and beyond.
The Article analyzes the farmers’ protests using a four-part paradigm to assess contempor…

Punjab: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government faced heat after protesting farmer leaders were detained and evicted in Punjab – the state where the Arvind Kejriwal-led party is in power under chief minister Bhagwant Mann.
Several farmer leaders, including Sarwan Singh Pandher and Jagjit Singh Dallewal, were detained in Mohali while returning from a meeting with a central delegation. Punjab Police evicted farmers fromShambhu and Khanauri protestsites, which had been blocked for over a year.
The action evoked reactions from AAP's political rivals. In a statement, BJP leader andUnion Minister Ravneet Singh Bittustrongly condemned the detention of farmer leaders. He alleged the AAP government in Punjab was trying to "sabotage" talks between the Centre and farmers.
The protesting farmers – led bySamyukta Kisan Morcha(Non-Political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha – have been camping at the Shambhu (Shambhu-Ambala) and Khanauri (Sangrur-Jind) border points between Punjab and Haryana since February 13 last year when security forces thwarted their march to Delhi. Farmer's Movement: Govts Will be More Cautious in Making Policies: Amra Ram
On June 4, 2024, the results of the Indian General Elections were announced, revealing a humbling outcome for both the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the opposition Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) led by the Indian National Congress (INC). The BJP, which boasted it would win over 400 seats, was reduced to 240 from its previous 303 seats in 2019. Meanwhile, the INC nearly doubled its seat count from 52 in 2019 to 99 in 2024.
In anearlier article, this writer had argued that despite a religiously charged atmosphere created by the grand inauguration of the Ram Temple at Ayodhya, the farmers’ movement had dented Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s image of invincibility. The movement shifted focus to issues like joblessness, inflation, hunger, and farmers’ suicides. Badal Saroj, a senior leader from the movement, highlighted its role in consolidating political opposition in several states, including Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh.
The election results corroborate this analysis, with BJP losing signif…

Indian farmers plan to march to the capital New Delhi on Wednesday as they push their demands for higher crop prices, a protest leader said, after several rounds of failed talks.
Farm union leaders are seeking guarantees of state support or a minimum purchase price for farmers’ produce.
“On March 6, farmers will come to Delhi from all over the country by train, bus and air,” protest leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal told reporters.
He said farmers would also block railway lines across the country on March 10.
The protests began in early February with hundreds of farmers in Punjab aiming to take their campaign to Delhi. They were blocked by police and paramilitary troops at Shambhu, at the border with neighbouring Haryana state, about 200 km from the capital.
