A 59-year-old woman in Malappuram district has died of a Shigella infection, the Kerala health department confirmed on Friday.

Shigella infections continued to rise in Kerala, with 19 fresh cases reported on Thursday, taking the total number of cases recorded in the state this month to 110, according to the Health Department.
In a statement, Kerala Health Minister K. Muraleedharan said the new cases comprised nine from Kozhikode, three from Thrissur, two each from Thiruvananthapuram and Kannur, and one each from Kollam, Ernakulam and Malappuram.
Kozhikode and Wayanad continued to report the highest number of Shigella infections this month, accounting for 33 and 18 cases, respectively.
The statement said outbreaks have been declared in Kozhikode and Wayanad.
Other districts reporting Shigella cases during June include Malappuram (14), Thiruvananthapuram (13), Thrissur (9), Kollam (8), Kannur (7), Alappuzha (3), Idukki (3) and Ernakulam (2).

Thrissur: A 43-year-old man who died while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Kodakara after suffering from severe abdominal pain is suspected to have been infected with Shigella, according to preliminary findings.
The deceased had been residing at Kuzhikaani in Kodakara. He passed away on Saturday.
Initial indications from the postmortem report suggest the presence of Shigella infection. Health authorities have stated that further investigation is required to determine the exact source of the infection.
