New Legion-backed law helps thousands of veterans with delinquent mortgages avoid foreclosure | The American Legion Thousands of financially distressed veterans at risk of foreclosure will become eligible for federal assistance under a new program signed into law Wednesday that allows them to defer monthly mortgage payments temporarily without losing their homes. The VA Home Loan Program Reform Act authorizes the Department of Veterans Affairs to create a “permanent partial claims program” that gives veterans a second chance to stay in their homes, according to the bill’s supporters. Under the program, the VA buys a portion of the veteran’s debt and secures a lien on the property, according to the bill. The veteran does not have to pay off the claim until the home is sold or refinanced. President Donald Trump signed the bill into law at a ceremony attended by Rep. Mike Bost, R-Ill., who is chairman of the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee, and Rep. Derrick Van Orden, R-Wis., the bill’s sponsor. “This bill provides desperately needed relief to veterans and their families who have fallen behind on their mortgages,” Trump said. The legislation, which passed unanimously in the Ho…

VA launches Partial Claim Program to help Veterans avoid home foreclosure - VA News
VA launches Partial Claim Program to help Veterans avoid home foreclosure - VA News WASHINGTON —The Department of Veterans Affairs today formally launched the VA Partial Claim Program , a new effort to help Veterans facing financial struggles avoid foreclosure and stay in their homes. The VA Partial Claim Program is authorized by the VA Home Loan Reform Act , which President Trump signed into law July 30, 2025. Here’s how it works: Mortgage servicers identify Veterans who are in default and might be able to qualify for the Partial Claim Program. Servicers place qualified Veterans on a three-month trial payment plan to assess their ability to stay current on their loan. When a Veteran successfully completes this trial period, the mortgage servicer will pay the overdue amount on the mortgage to make the Veteran current again. VA will then pay that same amount to the mortgage servicer. Servicers must repay VA when the loan is paid in full, refinanced, or the property is sold. “We are grateful to Congress and President Trump for creating VA’s Partial Claim Program, which will help keep thousands of Veterans in their homes,” said VA Secretary Doug Collins . VA Mortgage Help: New Law Supports Veterans in Need - DAV
VA Mortgage Help: New Law Supports Veterans in Need - DAV If you’re a veteran facing the stress of falling behind on your home loan, help is on the way. The VA Home Loan Program Reform Act , a new law signed by the president on July 30, establishes a partial claim program designed to provide federal assistance and a crucial safety net for veterans struggling with their Department of Veterans Affairs-backed mortgages. This vital legislation enhances the VA secretary’s authority to manage home loan defaults, mandates a strategy for veteran real estate representation and increases funding for homeless veterans’ services. The new partial claims program replaces the Veterans Affairs Servicing Program (VASP)—a “last-resort option” designed to help delinquent borrowers avoid foreclosure by lowering their mortgage rate and making monthly payments more affordable. “The shift to the partial claims program aims to provide a more consistent and effective solution for veterans facing financial hardship, aligning VA’s loss mitigation options with those available through other federal housing programs,” DAV Associate National Legislative Director Joe Lemay said. The VA home loan program, a corne…
