South Korea's military said Friday it scrambled fighter jets as five Chinese and six Russian military planes flew through its air defense zone, an area wider than the country's airspace.
Five Chinese and six Russian military aircraft entered and exited the Korea Air Defense Identification Zone in the East Sea and South Sea from 9:35 am (0035 GMT) to 1:53 pm, Seoul's Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement.
But the planes crossed into the KADIZ "without violating South Korean airspace", the JCS said, adding that the military "identified the aircraft before they entered KADIZ and deployed Air Force fighter jets to take tactical measures in preparation for any contingencies."
An air defense identification zone is a broader area than a country's airspace in which it tries to control aircraft for security reasons, but the concept is not defined in any international treaty.
China's defense ministry called the flights "their ninth joint strategic patrol," which occurred above the Sea of Japan, also known as the East Sea in South Korea.
It added in a post on its official social media account that the flights were…

The Joint Chiefs of Staff in Seoul said the Chinese and Russian aircraft had entered and then left the Korea Air Defense Identification Zone (KADIZ) over the East Sea and the South Sea.

The Chinese and Russian aircraft did not violate South Korean airspace, it said.
An air defense identification zone is not sovereign airspace but a buffer area where countries identify approaching aircraft for security purposes.
Military aircraft are generally expected to notify the relevant country before entering its air defense zone, although such notification is not legally required.
China and Russia did not comment immediately about the incident.

South Korea scrambled fighter jets Saturday after more than 10 Chinese and Russian military aircraft entered its air defense identification zone over the East Sea and waters off the country’s south, Seoul’s military said.
The aircraft entered and left the Korea Air Defense Identification Zone in sequence earlier in the day, but did not violate South Korean airspace, according to the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
“Our military identified the Chinese and Russian aircraft before they entered the KADIZ and deployed Air Force fighter jets to take tactical measures in preparation for possible contingencies,” the JCS said.
An air defense identification zone is not territorial airspace, but a buffer zone designated to identify foreign aircraft before they approach a country’s airspace and prevent accidental clashes.
Foreign military aircraft are generally expected to notify the relevant country before entering such a zone, although an ADIZ has no status under international law.
A JCS official said the entry appeared to have taken place during a joint air exercise by China and Russia.

SEOUL, June 27 (AJP) - More than 10 Chinese and Russian military aircraft entered South Korea’s air defense identification zone without prior notice on Saturday, prompting the Air Force to deploy fighter jets, the Joint Chiefs of Staff said.
The aircraft entered and exited the Korea Air Defense Identification Zone, or KADIZ, over the East and South seas in sequence for about four hours beginning at around 8:30 a.m.
None of the aircraft violated South Korean airspace.
The aircraft included bombers and fighter jets believed to be participating in an ongoing joint air exercise between China and Russia.
Chinese aircraft reportedly flew north from their territory and entered the KADIZ near Ieodo in the South Sea, while Russian aircraft entered the zone over the East Sea as they flew south.
Some of the aircraft later joined together and conducted maneuvering drills.

Seoul: South Korea's military reported on Saturday that more than ten Chinese and Russian military aircraft briefly entered the country's Air Defence Identification Zone (KADIZ), forcing the air force to deploy fighter aircraft as a form of defence.
According to Seoul's Joint Chiefs of Staff, the aircraft entered the KADIZ over the East and South Seas before exiting it. None of the aircraft crossed South Korea's territorial airspace, according to officials.
The military detected the aircraft before they entered the zone and tracked their movements throughout the incident. Fighter jets were deployed in accordance with routine operating protocols.
The new intrusion coincides with increased cooperative military operations by China and Russia in the region, creating security concerns for South Korea and its allies.
