His Majesty the King has granted Ruth Ellis a conditional pardon following the Deputy Prime Minister's advice.
The decision reflects the exceptional circumstances of the case, including evidence of domestic abuse and coercive and controlling behaviour that may have been understood differently today.
The pardon recognises that, under modern law and understanding, the outcome may have been different.

More than 70 years after her hanging,Ruth Ellis, the last woman to be executed in the United Kingdom, is to be posthumously pardoned. Justice Secretary David Lammy informed the House of Commons that King Charles has accepted the government’s recommendation to grant a conditional pardon, acknowledging a profound injustice in this exceptional case.
This decision does not call into question Ellis’s guilt in the murder of her lover, David Blakely, but retroactively commutes the death penalty to life imprisonment.
Ellis, who worked as a hostess at a nightclub, was executed on July 13, 1955, for shooting and killing Blakely outside a London pub. Ellis and Blakely had a tumultuous relationship marked by infidelity, violence, and a beating that caused her to miscarry.
At her trial, the judge had instructed the jurors to disregard the abuse as a defense, and that was enough for them toreturn a guilty verdict and sentence her to death in just 20 minutes.
Her grandchildren, whofought for years to clear her name, emphasized that the pardon does not undo the past or…

Ruth Ellis, the last woman to be executed in the United Kingdom, is to receive a posthumous pardon more than 70 years after she was hanged.
David Lammytold MPs today that the King had granted a conditional pardon in an 'exceptional case' on the advice of the Government.
Ellis, a nightclub hostess, was executed on 13 July 1955 after being convicted of murdering her lover, David Blakely.
But her grandchildren have long been campaigning for a pardon on the basis that she was the victim of domestic abuse.
Ellis shot Blakely dead outside The Magdala pub in Hampstead,London, following a tumultuous relationship involving infidelity on both sides, an aborted pregnancy, and violence including a punch in the stomach during an argument that led to a miscarriage.
The British public was already questioning whether capital punishment had a place in 20th-century society, and Ellis's case was politicised in the discussion of the death penalty as a method of punishment in modern Britain.
The trial judge …

The application for a pardon was brought by four of Ruth Ellis’s grandchildren. The application presented that her responsibility was profoundly shaped by domestic abuse, trauma and circumstances that were never properly recognised at her trial.
Under modern law, it is possible that Ruth Ellis could have argued the partial defences of loss of control or diminished responsibility applied to her - defences that might have reduced her conviction from murder to manslaughter, and which could have been considered …

Ruth Ellis, the last woman executed in the UK, received a posthumous conditional pardon recognising a "profound injustice" after decades of campaigning by her family.
Ellis was abused by her partner and would likely have faced manslaughter charges today; her execution helped shift public opinion against the death penalty.
Her pardon acknowledges the failure of the justice system, highlights the impact of domestic abuse, and reflects legal changes such as the abolition of capital punishment and diminished responsibility defence.

LONDON (AP) — The last woman to be executed inBritain, for gunning down her abusive lover outside a London pub more than 70 years ago, will be conditionally pardoned, Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy said Wednesday.
Ruth Ellis, a 28-year-old single mother and nightclub hostess, was hanged on July 13, 1955, for the murder of race-car driver David Blakely. She shot him outside the Magdala pub in the Hampstead neighborhood on April 10, 1955.
“While the pardon does not claim she was innocent of killing David Blakely, it replaces the death penalty with a sentence of life imprisonment to recognize a profound injustice in this exceptional case,” Lammy said.
The killing and trial caused a sensation, and Ellis became a cause celebre. When she went to the gallows, 1,000 people held a silent vigil outside Holloway Prison in north London.

The last woman hanged in the United Kingdom will be granted a conditional pardon but she will not be declared innocent, David Lammy has said.
The Deputy Prime Minister said the pardon will replace Ruth Ellis’s death penalty with a sentence of life imprisonment “to recognise a profound injustice in this exceptional case”.
He told the Commons: “We hope this brings a measure of peace to Ruth Ellis’s family, who have carried the weight of what happened to her for over 70 years.”
Laura Enston, Ellis’s granddaughter, said she hoped her grandmother’s story “serves as a lasting reminder that the justice system must reckon with the abuse that drives women to the edge – and must never be afraid to acknowledge when it has got things wrong”.
