Key Points:
Former Spanish Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero is under investigation after luxury watches and jewellery worth €1.2 million were found in his safe, raising suspicions of tax fraud and smuggling due to lack of proof of customs duty payments.
Zapatero is also being probed for alleged influence peddling related to the 2021 government bailout of airline Plus Ultra, accused of securing a €53 million bailout in exchange for a commission, which he denies.
This marks the first time in recent Spanish history that a former prime minister has been formally investigated, intensifying scrutiny on the Socialist Party led by current Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, a close ally of Zapatero.
Authorities have conducted raids on Zapatero’s office and the Socialist Party headquarters, seizing documents as part of ongoing corruption investigations.
Zapatero has been summoned to testify in court later this month and his spokesman has stated he will provide explanations before the judge regarding the jewellery.

Former Spanish Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero is facing a fresh criminal investigation after authorities reportedly discovered jewellery worth €1.2m during a raid linked to an existing corruption inquiry.
The discovery has widened legal scrutiny of the former Socialist leader, who is already under investigation over allegations of influence peddling connected to a government bailout granted to Spanish airline Plus Ultra during the Covid-19 pandemic.
According to Spanish media reports, investigators found necklaces, bracelets, rings and earrings valued at approximately €1.2m during a search of Zapatero’s office last month.
The jewellery, reportedly made from gold and adorned with sapphires and emeralds originating from Zambia and Thailand, has prompted investigators to examine whether the former prime minister complied with customs and tax obligations related to the items.
Authorities are now investigating Zapatero for alleged tax fraud and smuggling after reportedly questioning whether customs duties were properly paid on the collection.
Zapatero’s spokesman, Luis Arroyo, said the former prime…

MADRID – Pressure is mounting on former Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero after Spain’s top criminal court opened a separate probe into him for alleged smuggling and tax fraud on Friday.
The new line of inquiry centres on more than 100 items of jewellery police agents found last month during a raid at Zapatero’s private office, valued at more than €1.3 million, according to the court statement.
Judge Jose Luis Calama claimed the legal origin of the jewels was “not currently justified”. Their possession, combined with the lack of tax documentation regarding their acquisition, constitutes “objective and reasonable evidence of the possible existence of significant tax fraud.”
He also found grounds to investigate possible smuggling offences, noting that the goods may have entered the EU “by circumventing the requisite controls and tax obligations”.
