Zakias Everest: A Climb for the Women of Afghanistan
Zakias Everest: A Climb for the Women of Afghanistan 30 May 2026 As I descend from the highest point on earth, my heart is filled with gratitude and humility. This climb was never just a sporting achievement; it was a journey made possible through the love, prayers, and support of the people who stood beside me every step of the way. Above all, thanks to my parents and I bow my head in respect to my mother; a woman whose patience, tears, prayers, and unwavering faith carried me to the top of the world. Every step I took on the ice of Everest was a step she carried in her heart. I am deeply grateful to all my friends, companions, coaches, and everyone who supported me throughout this challenging path. You were the strength that pushed me forward in the hardest moments. I extend my heartfelt thanks to the Baba Mazari Foundation; an organisation that not only supported me financially and morally, but also believed that this climb could amplify the voices of a thousand Afghan women and girls. Without their trust and support, this dream would never have become reality. But this is not the end. This is only the beginning of my journey. My goal was never just to reach the summit. …

She Escaped the Taliban. Now She's Climbing Mount Everest. River Ahmad is climbing Mount Everest in 2026(Photo: Everest Live) The Taliban stopped the bus halfway to Kabul. “There were maybe 15 or 16 people on the bus,”River Ahmadtold me atMount Everest Base Campin early May. “And I was the only woman.” It was 2014, the final year of the U.S. and NATO combat operations against the Taliban in Afghanistan, and River Ahmad was taking the bus from Ghazni province in the country’s southeast to Kabul. River had told her father she was traveling to the capital to study dentistry, and he’d agreed to buy her a bus ticket. But secretly, River, who was 18 at the time, hoped to become a journalist in Kabul, so that she could report on women’s rights. The Taliban fighters entered the bus, River said. Then, without warning, they opened fire on the passengers. Amidst the flying bullets, River thought quickly. By chance, she happened to be on her period. She quickly wiped handfuls of blood across her face and pretended to be dead, as the gunmen walked down the aisles looking for survivors. As the two gunmen walked the length of the bus, they stopped at her seat. “The gunmen checked me,” she s…

Born in the 1990s in Jaghori, a Hazara-populated district in Afghanistan’s Ghazni province, Zakia fled her homeland soon after the Taliban returned to power in August 2021.
