Over 40 million people are under extreme heat warnings as a wave of extreme temperatures sweeps across the eastern half of the country. Heat alerts stretch from Florida to Michigan and Minnesota, and temperatures in the 90s will reach as far north as Chicago. Historic Heatwave Bakes U.S. Ahead Of July 4 Holiday Weekend
Historic Heatwave Bakes U.S. Ahead Of July 4 Holiday Weekend
bySarah Tancredi|Jul 2, 2026|Climate Crisis,Environmental News
Heatwave bakes the U.S. ahead of July 4 celebrations as a powerful wave of record-breaking temperatures spreads from the Midwest into the eastern United States, placing tens of millions of Americans under heat warnings through the Independence Day holiday weekend. Forecasters warn that“real-feel” temperatures could range from 100°F to 115°F (37.8°C to 46.1°C)across several states, significantly increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses, particularly for children, older adults, outdoor workers, and people with underlying health conditions.
As the nation prepares to celebrate its 250th Independence Day anniversary, local governments are expanding emergency measures, opening cooling centers, extending public pool hours, and urging residents to conserve electricity as soaring temperatures place additional pressure on already strained power grids.
The intense heat that initially affected parts of the Midwest has now spread into major metropolitan areas across the East Coast.

(Thursday, July 2, 3 p.m. EDT):
Extreme heat warnings covered much of the Midwest, mid-Atlantic, and Northeast U.S. on Thursday – including the heavily populated Interstate 95 corridor from Virginia to southern Maine – as a well-predicted heat wave intensified with the approach of a holiday weekend, bringing widespread temperatures above 100 degrees Fahrenheit. As the United States prepared to commemorate the nation’s 250th birthday, the U.S. capital had entered one of the worst heat waves in its history. As of midday Thursday, the official forecast for Washington’s Reagan National Airport was for highs of 102°F, 104°F, and 103°F for Thursday through Saturday, July 2-4. These readings would melt the D.C. daily records of 101°F, 101°F, and 100°F. In observations that go back to 1871, Washington has never recorded two consecutive days of 10…

A heat dome will bring dangerously hot and humid conditions to the eastern half of the United States this week in the region’s most widespread heat wave of the summer so far.
The heat dome is building in response to a large shift in the jet stream that’s also bringing a big cooldown to the West. Powerful winds will accompany the cooldown and intensify already
dangerous fire weather conditions in Utah
, where a large, destructive fire is ongoing, and in neighboring states.
The cooler temperatures in the West the past few days will be coming to an end. Beginning Monday, temperatures will rise across portions of Utah, Colorado, and Arizona, further complicating firefighter’s ability to fight ongoing wildfires.
