Two young children have died and their mother has been injured after a car ploughed into the trio.
The children, aged one and five, were in a pram when they were struck by a vehicle at the intersection of Joseph and Gilbert streets in Cabramatta, south-westSydney, at 3.15pm on Wednesday.
Paramedics treated the children at the scene, and rushed them to hospital in a critical condition where they later died.
Their 33-year-old mother was treated for minor injuries.
The 56-year-old driver was uninjured and arrested before being taken to hospital under police escort for mandatory testing.
Fairfield City Police's Acting Superintendent Timothy Calman said members of the public played a 'phenomenal' part in attempting to save the children.
'We had a number of motorists stop and collectively tip the car onto its side in order to get one of the children free from underneath the vehicle,' he said.
'Bystanders assisted with CPR.'

A tight-knit community is reeling after a kindergarten student and her baby brother were killed when a SUV collided with a pram shortly after school pick-up.
The girl and her brother have been identified as Katherine, 5, and Harry, aged 14 months - the only two children of 33-year-old mother Sok Ram.
The children were struck by the vehicle while crossing a street with their mother in Cabramatta, in Sydney's southwest, about 3.15pm on Wednesday.
Katherine was in her first year of kindergarten and had just been picked up after receiving an award, according to an online fundraiser on the family's behalf.
The children's lives were taken in a "split second", the man behind the fundraiser, Patrick Te, said.
"As they were crossing the road together, heading back to the car, an oncoming vehicle suddenly struck both Katherine and the pram where Harry was sitting," he said.
"A mother not only lost a child — she lost both of her children, her only two children."
The GoFundMe fundraiser had reached nearly $45,000 in donations by late on Thursday morning.

Frantic bystanders have desperately tried to save two young children after a car crashed into their pram in Sydney’s south-west, even lifting the SUV onto its side to rescue one trapped underneath.
The two children, aged one and five, died in the horror accident at the intersection of Gilbert and Joseph streets in Cabramatta just after 3pm on Wednesday. A 33-year-old woman, believed by police to be their mother, was treated at the scene for minor injuries.
Superintendent Timothy Calman said the woman was pushing the pram when it was struck by the car.
“It’s probably one of the most confronting scenes that police have come across dealing with young children,” Calman told reporters.
“We’ve had a number of motorists that actually stopped and collectively have moved the vehicle onto its side, tipped the car over in order to get one of the children from underneath the vehicle. Other bystanders have assisted with CPR to assist the children and the children’s mother.
“The community involved here this afternoon, was, I can only say, it’s phenomenal.”
