Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced plans to erect a full-scale monument to Hetman Ivan Mazepa in Kyiv.
According to an Ukrinform correspondent, speaking during Constitution Day commemorations, Zelensky said the monument should stand on the site where the statue of Vladimir Lenin was toppled during the Euromaidan protests in December 2013.
"The scale of this historical figure deserves a full-fledged monument in the capital of our state. I believe the perfect location already exists. It has existed since December 2013 on Shevchenko Boulevard. And I am convinced that where Lenin fell, Mazepa will stand firmly," Zelensky said.
He said the monument would symbolize the restoration of historical justice and pay tribute to one of the key figures in Ukrainian statehood.
Zelensky described Mazepa as an outstanding statesman, military leader, patron of the arts, and head of the Cossack state.
The President also announced that a bronze bust of Mazepa will be installed at the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra as a symbol of the Hetman's contribution to Ukraine's spiritual and cultural development.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy delivered a Constitution Day address at the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra and announced new symbolic decisions for Ukrainian statehood. In particular, he said he had submitted a bill on the Ukrainian National Pantheon to parliament and announced the creation of a new state award — the Order of Europe.
Zelenskyy recalled that on June 28 Ukraine marks 30 years since the adoption of its Constitution. According to him, the Basic Law enshrined Ukraine’s right to be itself — sovereign, indivisible and independent.
“Any articles of the Constitution would be only letters on paper without millions of Ukrainians who are ready to defend our independence, their land, their rights and freedoms, and to do so in unity,” the president said.

The president said Russia had already damaged or destroyed 740 religious sites in Ukraine — churches, mosques and synagogues.…
