Japan's Meteorological Agency (JMA) issued a tsunami advisory for Iwate Prefecture on Sunday after a 6.7-magnitude earthquake struck off its coast. The quake occurred at 5:03 pm local time, registering shindo level 4 in Morioka and Yahaba in Iwate Prefecture and Wakuya in nearby Miyagi Prefecture, according to The Japan Times.
Earlier, India's National Centre for Seismology (NCS) also reported a 6.6-magnitude earthquake in the North Pacific Ocean, off Iwate's coast, at 1:33 pm IST. The quake occurred at a depth of 30 km beneath the Earth’s crust. No major damage or casualties were reported, but the tremor triggered temporary tsunami concerns. Japan’s JMA said it continuously monitors seismic and volcanic activity and issues alerts to reduce damage from earthquakes, tsunamis, and eruptions.
Japan is no stranger to earthquakes. The country is one of the most seismically active places on Earth and has even been called the birthplace of seismology, the study of earthquakes. The study of tsunamis, a Japanese word meaning harbour wave, also originated here. Each year, Japan experiences around 1,500 earthquakes tha…

The Japanese government has warned of a slightly heightened risk of a megaquake in the next week after a strong 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck off the country’s northeastern coast on Monday, triggering a tsunami warning, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency and the US Geological Survey.
The three-meter (9.8-foot) tsunami warning was issued following the quake, but the threat was later revised down to a
tsunami
advisory before being lifted altogether, authorities said.
Now residents in 182 towns across seven prefectures have been urged to be on alert for a potential stronger earthquake and to confirm evacuation routes and shelters, Japan’s national broadcaster NHK reported.

TOKYO --A powerful 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck off northern Japan late Monday, injuring at least 23 people and triggering a tsunami in Pacific coast communities, officials said. Authorities warned of possible aftershocks and an increased risk of a megaquake.
The Japanese government was still assessing damages from the tsunami and late-evening quake, which struck at about 11:15 p.m. in the Pacific Ocean, around 80 kilometers (50 miles) off the coast of Aomori, the northernmost prefecture of Japan's main Honshu island.
"I've never experienced such a big shaking," convenience store owner Nobuo Yamada told the public broadcaster NHK in the Aomori prefecture town of Hachinohe, adding that "luckily" power lines were still operating in his area.
A tsunami of up to 70 centimeters (2 feet, 4 inches) was measured in Kuji port in Iwate prefecture, just south of Aomori, and tsunami levels of up to 50 centimeters struck other coastal communities in the region, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.
The Fire and Disaster Management Agency said 23 people were injured, including one seriously. Most of them were hit by …

TOKYO --A powerful earthquake struck off Japan's northern coast on Thursday, but the country's meteorological agency said there was no danger of a tsunami.
The quake had a magnitude of 7.2 and occurred off the eastern coast of Iwate, upgraded from an initial reading of 6.9, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. The quake had a depth of about 50 kilometers (30 miles), it said. JMA The U.S. Geological Survey also reported a magnitude of 6.9.
The rattling occurred in an area where strong earthquakes have repeatedly been reported in recent months, including one that triggered a weeklong mega-quake caution advisory in December.
The quake, which struck Japan's northeastern region during Thursday morning's rush hour, also mildly shook Tokyo. There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage, according to top government spokesperson Minoru Kihara.
Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi told reporters in Tokyo that her government's emergency team is "putting people's lives first," while assessing information and preparing for relief operations, if needed. She urged residents in the affected regions to use caution against possi…

TOKYO: An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.1 shook northeastern Japan early Sunday, but it posed no threat of tsunami, Kyodo News reported.
The focus of the 5.21am quake was in the Pacific off Iwate Prefecture at a depth of about 40 kilometres (km), according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.
The quake measured lower 5 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale of 7 in parts of Aomori and Iwate prefectures.
No abnormalities were reported at the Higashidori nuclear power plant in Aomori or at the Onagawa nuclear power complex in Miyagi Prefecture, according to Tohoku Electric Power Co.
There were also no abnormalities at a nuclear fuel reprocessing plant in Rokkasho, a Pacific coastal village in Aomori Prefecture, Japan Nuclear Fuel Ltd. said.
The quake comes just days after an M7.2 earthquake struck the same region, injuring at least 10 people, disrupting bullet train services and forcing schools to close temporarily.
Thursday's early-morning quake also occurred off Iwate at a depth of 44km, measuring upper 6 on the seismic intensity scale in Hashikami, Aomori.
At the time, the agency urged the publi…

Nankai Trough Megaquake Could Kill 298,000, Displace 12.3 Million ...
A Japanese government task force report revised estimates for a potential Nankai Trough megaquake, projecting economic damage up to 270.3 trillion yen ($1.81 trillion) and as many as 298,000 deaths. The figures were released Monday for the anticipated earthquake off Japan's Pacific coast.
The economic damage estimate increased from 214.2 trillion yen, reflecting inflation and updated ground data expanding potential flood areas, the Cabinet Office showed. The maximum death toll estimate decreased about 10% from 2012 due to mitigation efforts, but misses a government goal for an 80% reduction set in 2014.
Japan's government sees about an 80% chance of a magnitude 8-to-9 earthquake along the Nankai Trough zone. This seabed area runs for approximately 900 km where the Philippine Sea Plate is subducting under the Eurasian Plate.
Tsunamis could cause 215,000 of the projected deaths if only 20% of people evacuate immediately, according to the report. Increasing the evacuation rate to 70% could lower tsunami fatalities to 94,000, showing the importance of swift evacuation.
The number of potential evacuees rose to 12…

7.4 magnitude earthquake strikes off Japanese coast, USGS says - ABC News
Initial tsunami warnings were ultimately cancelled.
LONDON and TOKYO -- A 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck on Monday off Japan's northeastern coast, the U.S. Geological Survey said, prompting authorities to issue tsunami warnings and advisories along parts of the coast that were later downgraded to advisories and then cancelled.
"Based on the preliminary earthquake parameters, hazardous tsunami waves are possible for coasts located within 300 km of the earthquake epicenter," USGS said after the quake was detected.
The Japan Meteorological Agency initially said tsunami warnings were in place for some of the coast along the Pacific, along with lesser advisories and forecasts farther away from the quake's center.
"Residents in areas where tsunami warnings have been issued should immediately evacuate to higher ground or evacuation buildings and other higher, safer locations," Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said.
The tsunami waves that were expected to have been the highest struck the coast within hours, with the largest one registering about 80 cm, or about 2.5 feet, but officials said they had not ruled out …

The Cabinet Office released on March 31 slightly lower death and disaster projections from an expected Nankai Trough megaquake than calculated a decade ago, but the numbers remain horrific and far short of the government's targets.
The estimates indicate the potentially devastating earthquake, with an 80 percent chance of occurring within 30 years, would result inapproximately 298,000 fatalities and 2.35 million buildings collapsing in a worst-case scenario.
The expected damage and death toll have decreased only slightly compared to estimates from 10 years ago and remain far from meeting the government's disaster mitigation efforts.
The expert panel assumed a magnitude-9 level earthquake originating in a sea area from Suruga Bay in Shizuoka Prefecture to the Hyuganada coast off Miyazaki Prefecture in the Kyushu region.
The panel then recalculated the seismic intensity, tsunami height and potential flood area using the latest soil and topographical data for the potentially affected regions.
The estimates have been updated for the fir…

Over 10 injured as M7.2 quake hits northeastern Japan, traffic disrupted
TOKYO - An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.2 struck northeastern Japan on Thursday, injuring more than 10 people, disrupting bullet train services and forcing schools to temporarily close.
There was no danger of a tsunami from the 7:30 a.m. quake that occurred off the Pacific coast of Iwate Prefecture at a depth of 44 kilometers, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. It measured upper 6 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale of 7 in Hashikami and lower 6 in Hachinohe, both in Aomori Prefecture.
An intensity of upper 6 means it is impossible to remain standing or move without crawling, and most unfixed furniture will move and objects will topple over, according to the agency.
Nine people appear to have sustained minor injuries in five municipalities in Aomori, while two people in Iwate were hurt including a woman in her 60s who was seriously injured after hitting her head while working in her garden.
At a press conference, the weather agency urged the public to remain alert for earthquakes measuring upper 6 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale over the next week.

Japan Earthquakes and Tsunamis Explained: Why the Country Is So ...
Japan is one of the most earthquake-prone countries on Earth, experiencing thousands of tremors every year, ranging from mild shakes to catastrophic quakes that trigger devastating tsunamis. Its unique position along major tectonic boundaries has made it a natural laboratory for studying Earth's geological processes — but also a region of persistent seismic risk.
This article explains the scientific reasons behindJapan's frequent earthquakes and tsunamis, examining the tectonic forces at play, how undersea quakes generate massive waves, and what Japan has done to minimize the damage from these natural events.
Japan'svulnerability to earthquakesstems from its location along the Pacific Ring of Fire, a 40,000-kilometer belt of intense seismic and volcanic activity encircling the Pacific Ocean. Within this region, several massive tectonic plates collide and shift, releasing enormous amounts of energy through earthquakes. Japan sits at the intersection of four major tectonic plates:
The Pacific Plate and Philippine Sea Plate are oceanic plates that constantly move westward, sliding beneath the continental Eurasian …

The Tokyo metropolitan region was hit by a strong earthquake on Tuesday night, generating concern among residents. The earthquake, recorded at magnitude 5.5 on the Richter scale, had its epicenter in the south of Ibaraki prefecture, neighboring the Japanese capital, and occurred at around 7:46 pm local time. Authorities quickly confirmed that, despite the intensity, there was no risk of a tsunami.
Details of the tremor and the exact location of the epicenter
The tremors were clearly felt in several areas of greater Tokyo, especially in Ibaraki Prefecture, where the shaking was most noticeable. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) identified the epicenter precisely in the southern part of the prefecture, confirming the time of occurrence and magnitude. The depth of the tremor is a crucial factor contributing to risk assessment.
Understand the Japanese seismic intensity scale and its effects
The earthquake was rated 5 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale, known as Shindo. Unlike the Richter s…

Japan Tsunami Alert Latest Live Updates: Magnitude 7.7 Quake Strikes Off Northern Japan
Thank you for following our live updates on the magnitude 7.7 earthquake that struck off the north of Japan. Its epicenter was in the Pacific Ocean, 10km deep, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.
At least one person was injured in Aomori, north of Iwate prefecture, after falling, the Fire and Disaster Management Agency said. Otherwise, there were no reported casualties and minimal damage.
The quake triggered a tsunami warning, with the Japan Meteorological Agency cautioning of waves up to 3m high. The warning was later downgraded to a tsunami advisory, predicting waves up to 1m.
The temblor measured 5+ on Japan's seismic intensity scale—strong enough to make movement difficult and potentially collapse unreinforced concrete-block walls.
