BANGKOK – Two Chinese Uighur men were sentenced to death on
June 11
for carrying out a 2015 attack on a Bangkok shrine that killed 20 people, a long-awaited verdict in Thailand’s deadliest bombing case.
A Thai court convicted Yusufu Mieraili and Bilal Mohammed of premeditated and attempted murder for their role in planting a bomb at the popular Erawan Shrine
in Bangkok’s commercial heart in August 2015.
The deadly blast tore apart the site where worshippers and tourists had gathered, injuring more than 100 people and leaving the shrine littered with motorbike fragments and singed debris.
One Singaporean woman was among the dead when the explosives – apparently left in a backpack – detonated.
Seven other Singaporeans were injured, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement to Parliament…

A Thai court handed out death sentences on Thursday to two ethnic Uyghur men from the northwestern Chinese region of Xinjiang for a 2015 bombing in the centre of Bangkok that killed 20 people, according to a court statement.
The explosion occurred at the Erawan Shrine in the centre of Bangkok, an area popular with foreign tourists. As well as the 20 people killed, another 120 were injured. Five of the dead were from mainland China and two from Hong Kong.
“The actions of both defendants constitute multiple separate offenses,” the court statement said, adding that the sentence included punishment for the charge of premeditated murder, which resulted in the death penalty.
Both of the accused will appeal the sentence within a month, a lawyer for one of the men, Choochat Kanpai, told reporters.

Thai court sentences two Uyghur men to death for Bangkok shrine bombing
A Thai court sentenced two Chinese Uyghur men to death for the 2015 bombing at Bangkok’s Erawan Shrine, closing one of the country’s most painful criminal cases and reopening the political wounds around it. The ruling centered not only on the attack that killed 20 people and injured 125, but on the long shadow it cast over Thailand’s security policy, its relations with China and the treatment of Uyghurs.
The defendants, Yusufu Mieraili and Bilal Mohammed, were convicted of premeditated and attempted murder for helping plant the bomb at the shrine in Bangkok’s Ratchaprasong intersection, in the Pathum Wan district. The blast struck at about 6:55 p.m. local time on 17 August 2015, ripping through a site crowded with worshippers and tourist…
