In classic Didier Deschamps fashion, France struggled early but recovered to overwhelm Senegal and secure a 3-1 victory to begin their2026 FIFA World Cup, thanks to a second-half brace from Kylian Mbappe.
Les Bleus struggled mightily through the opening 45 minutes, completely stymied in their build-up and unable to create good chances.
Senegal should have gone in front on two different occasions in the first half, as Nicolas Jackson hit the post on 25 minutes and Ismaila Sarr had a disastrous close-range miss on the stroke of halftime. Their wastefulness would be their downfall, as France made tactical tweaks at halftime and began to take charge of the game.
After Edouard Mendy made two brilliant saves early in the second half to keep the game level, Mbappe was denied a penalty on the hour mark by a baffling referee de…

Kylian Mbappe returns to his favorite stage this summer, with France once again among the leading contenders for glory at the 2026World Cup.
Mbappe has scored an incredible 86 goals in 103 appearances across his first two seasons with Real Madrid. However, a lack of a La Liga or Champions League titles at the same time as his former club Paris Saint-Germain have become Europe's dominant force makes club football a complicated picture for the 27-year-old at present.
His previous two outings at the World Cup have been indisputably stellar, though. Mbappe became the first teenager since Pele to score in a World Cup final as Les Bleus beat Croatia 4-2 to win their second title in 2018.

It used to be said that the World Cup does not truly start until Brazil get going, but with the five-time champions losing their lustre in recent years, the modern version could be when France get under way given their embarrassment of riches in attack. Indeed, manager Didier Deschamps naming four world-class forwards in a 4-2-4 evoked memories of 1970 Brazil, one of the tournament’s greatest sides.
It failed to click however in the first half as France struggled to get the ball to their star forwards, with a strong Senegal side dominating midfield. A slight adjustment at half-time to move Michael Olise into the number 10 position got the French purring in the second half, however, and he found Mbappé with a brilliant pass for the opening goal. Goals from Bradley Barcola and a second brilliant long-range effort by Mbappé

Group winners Belgium face a stern test when Senegal arrive at the Seattle Stadium on Wednesday evening in the round of 32 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Rudi Garcia’s side recovered from a slow start to top their group but have shown inconsistency throughout, while the Lions of Teranga come through as one of the best third-placed sides.
Match preview
Belgium arrive in the knockout rounds as group winners with five points, six goals scored, and two conceded, though their path through the group stage was far from convincing and will have offered encouragement to Senegal’s camp.
Garcia’s side were held to a 1-1 draw against Egypt in their opening fixture before being pegged to a goalless outing against Iran – results that raised serious questions about their tournament credentials.
A commanding 5-0 dismantling of New Zealand in the final group game provided some much-needed relief and momentum they seek to carry into the knockout stage.

Senegal have beaten Iraq 5-0 and are on course for the round of 32 at the 2026 World Cup.
After labouring a little in the first half against 10 men, the AFCON finalists have built a 5-0 lead which leaves them on the verge of progressing to the round of 32. Inspired substitutions allowed Senegal to build up the lead they needed as Pape Gueye scored two brilliant goals before Iliman Ndiaye added his side's fifth.
The AFCON finalists are now England's most likely opponents in the round of 32.

WHAT TO KNOW
Get ready for some of the world's biggest stars to take center stage at the World Cup on Tuesday.
The day begins with Kylian Mbappé's France kicking off their campaign as they look to reclaim the title. Their squad depth is unmatched in the tournament field, and the last time Mbappé played in a World Cup match, he scored a hat trick in a losing effort against Lionel Messi — more on him in a moment — and Argentina in the 2022 final. And don't forget that Mbappé won it all with France in 2018 as a teenager.
In the next match, Erling Haaland will play his first-ever World Cup match, as Norway hasn't qualified since 1998. He's one of the game's most prolific goal scorers and will be one to watch in the Golden Boot race.
If that wasn't enough, the game's biggest star begins his title defense in Kansas City as Messi and Argentina take on Algeria.

France vs Morocco Preview: Mbappé’s Perfect Run Meets Morocco’s Ruthless Evolution in Boston
Introduction
France arrive in the FIFA World Cup 2026 quarterfinals with a perfect record, but not a perfect feeling. Didier Deschamps’ side have won every match they have played, scored heavily for most of the tournament and still possess the most frightening forward in the competition in Kylian Mbappé. Yet their 1–0 win over Paraguay in the Round of 16 was not a display of flowing authority. It was a fight in the heat, a match dragged into bruising duels, interruptions and frustration before Mbappé’s penalty finally settled it.
Morocco arrive in Boston with a different kind of authority. Their 3–0 win over Canada was not smooth from start to finish; for much of the first half, the co-hosts pressed harder, ran harder and made Morocco look uncomfortable. Then the Atlas Lions adjusted. Az…

France vs. Morocco Prediction, Odds, Best Prop Bet for World Cup ...
France and Morocco met in the 2022 World Cup semifinals, though France (the eventual runner-up) had the clear edge in that match, winning 2-0.
That was just the second team in history that the two nations faced off, but now they meet again in the quarterfinals of the 2026 World Cup.
France has dominated so far in 2026, outscoring opponents 10-2 in the Group Stage before beating Sweden 3-0 and Paraguay 1-0 to advance to the quarterfinals. Meanwhile, Morocco needed penalties in the Round of 32 to beat the Netherlands before it blew out Canada (3-0) in the Round of 16.
Morocco finished in fourth in the 2022 World Cup, and this is just the second time ever that the nation has made the quarterfinals.
Meanwhile, France won in 2018, was the runner-up in 2022 and has four consecutive quarterfinal appearances.

In a dramatic turn at today’s World Cup draw at John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington DC. in Washington DC, Senegal has once again been paired with France, setting the stage for a highly anticipated Group I encounter. Alongside Norway and a soon-to-be-determined FIFA play-off winner, this group promises fierce competition and compelling storylines.
The announcement immediately drew comparisons to the legendary opening match of the 2002 Korea/Japan World Cup, when Senegal, then newcomers, shocked the football world by defeating defending champions France. That landmark game, played before a crowd of over 62,000 at Seoul World Cup Stadium, saw Papa Bouba Diop’s 30th-minute goal seal a 1-0 victory and inspire a generation across Africa.

France Predicted Lineup vs. Senegal: World Cup Group I
France will certainly hope that Tuesday’s tantalising duel with Senegal is the first of several visits to MetLife Stadium this summer, given that the New Jersey amphitheatre will be hosting the 2026 World Cup final.
The two-time world champion was on the brink of history in Qatar, taking a Lionel Messi-inspired Argentina to penalties, but Les Bleus succumbed in the shootout and Brazil thus remains the only nation to retain the World Cup trophy.
France may be bereft of that pressure in North America, yet that
doesn’t mean expectations are any less subdued
. There are depth concerns in midfield and potential vulnerabilities at fullback, but we’ve all seen the wealth of attacking talent at Didier Deschamps’s disposal and assumed the French will steamroll whoever has the misfortune of facing them this summer.
However, a clash with Senegal, represents a tough challenge on Matchday 1. Memories of 2002 have re-emerged, and this Senegal team is far stronger than the plucky unit that shocked the soccer world 24 years ago.
Here‘s the starting lineup Deschamps could pick for France’s

World Cup: AFCON Controversy Behind Us, Says Senegal Coach
Senegal coach Pape Thiaw has said his team has moved on from the controversy surrounding January’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final and is fully focused on its World Cup opener against France.
Speaking ahead of Tuesday’s Group I encounter at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, Thiaw dismissed suggestions that the lingering dispute over the AFCON title could distract his players, stressing that their attention is now on the global tournament.
The coach said the team had prepared well for the World Cup and was concentrating solely on the challenge posed by France.Advertisement
“I am not going to go back over the AFCON, that’s behind us. This is the World Cup. We have prepared well for it, and we are focused on tomorrow’s match,” Thiaw said.
The controversy stems from the AFCON final in Rabat, whereSenegal defeated Morocco 1-0after extra time. During the match, several Senegal players briefly walked off the pitch in protest after a late penalty was awarded to the hosts. Play eventually resumed, Morocco’s Brahim Diaz missed the spot-kick, and Pape Gueye later scored the decisive goal.

Why France Is 'On Another Level' Entering The World Cup Round Of 32
Nine points, first place in a star-studded Group I and a spot in the round of 32: that's the dominant start that France has produced at the2026 FIFA World Cup.
But the round of 32 brings higher stakes and a brand-new level of competition: the winner moves on, the loser goes home. For FOX Sports’ Zlatan Ibrahimović, this France team stands in a league of its own.
"This is levels. When they switch on, I don’t see many teams beating them. The only chance they invite their opponents to the game is when they relax, and they switch off," Ibrahimović said after France’s 4-1 win over Norway. "This is something else. Now everybody is eating. It’s a team to watch out (for), they are the favorites to win the World Cup. It’s on another level."
The 2022 World Cup runner-ups won all three group stage games over Norway, Senegal and Iraq and are+350to win the tournament. On top of their nine points, France scored 10 total goals and conceded just two.

arrive at
World Cup 2026
among the leading contenders to lift the trophy and will be aiming to begin their Group I campaign with three points when they face
Senegal
in East Rutherford on Tuesday.
Didier Deschamps is overseeing his final major tournament before stepping down after the World Cup, and the France boss has an opportunity to add a second world title to the one he won in 2018.
While France remain packed with elite talent, Senegal will not be intimidated. The Lions of Teranga are appearing at a third successive World Cup and have developed into one of Africa’s most consistent international sides.
Their qualification campaign was completed unbeaten, and they have kept five clean sheets in their last seven matches.
With Norway and Panama also in Group I, both teams know that avoiding defeat in the opener could prove crucial.

Rankedthird in the world by FIFAcoming into the 2026 tournament, France are considered by many to be the top choice to win the title, having triumphed for a third time in their history back in 2018. Head coach Didier Deschamps is in charge of his final tournament and will step down after the World Cup, with Zinedine Zidane expected to replace him.
They will meet French-speaking Senegal in their opener. The Lions of Teranga are out to prove they were deserving of the Africa Cup of Nations title that was stripped from them in the aftermath of the tournament. Senegal at World Cup 2026: Team Preview, History, Key Players & Prediction
Senegal World Cup 2026 preview: Pape Thiaw’s Lions of Teranga arrive in North America as ambitious outsiders, mixing Sadio Mané’s experience, Kalidou Koulibaly’s defensive authority and a younger, quicker attacking generation built to challenge France, Norway and Iraq in Group I.
Senegal reach World Cup 2026 with a familiar sense of danger around them. They are not a novelty team, not a romantic outsider and not a side content with participation. This is a football nation that has already produced one of the greatest opening shocks in World Cup history, reached a quarter-final, won major continental honours and established itself as one of Africa’s most reliable modern powers.
The challenge now is different. Senegal are trying to refresh without losing the hard edge that made them so difficult to beat. The squad still has icons: Sadio Mané remains the emotional reference point, Koulibaly remains the defensive leader and Édouard Mendy brings experience in goal. But Thiaw has moved the team towards a younger, quicker profile, with more dynamic movement…

Didier Deschamps’ last dance with France
Didier Deschamps
is set to leave his post as France’s head coach when his contract expires after the World Cup, drawing the curtain on a 14-year tenure. Of course, his most notable achievement was the 2018 World Cup victory, which enabled him to join Mário Zagallo and Franz Beckenbauer as the only people to win the World Cup as both player and manager.
While his tactics have been criticised for being too conservative at times, he can point to his consistently successful tournament record to prove their effectiveness. The 57-year-old former midfielder certainly won’t be short of attacking options this time around, as his squad features truckloads of attacking firepower in the likes of
Kylian Mbappé
,
Ousmane Dembélé

Michael Olise

After a day off from action, the 2026World Cupresumes on Thursday with a powerhouse quarterfinal matchup of France vs. Morocco.
France enters the match as one of the premier favorites remaining despite a few tough matches to open the knockout stage of the tournament. After winning their group, the 2018 champions cruised through Sweden in the Round of 32 but had to survive a physical Paraguay team to win in the Round of 16.
Star forward Kylian Mbappe is once again leading the way, as his seven goals are tied for the second most in the 2026 tournament behind just Lionel Messi. However, Mbappe isn't the only France star performing well, as Ousmane Dembele has four goals while Michael Olise leads all players with five assists.

opener that carries real historical weight. The last time these two met at a World Cup, Senegal shocked the defending champions 1-0 in 2002. This time,
France
are heavy favourites, but
Senegal
arrive with confidence after a strong qualification campaign. Both teams know an early win could set the tone for the group.
France head into the tournament in good form after solid warm-up results and with
Kylian Mbappé
fully fit and leading the line. Senegal has looked organised and dangerous on the counter in recent games, though they’ll be tested by France’s quality.
The mood in the French camp is confident but focused, while Senegal is treating this as a chance to make a statement on the biggest stage.
This matchup pits France’s technical superiority and depth against Senegal’s physicality and counter-attacking threat. Didier Deschamps will want control and early goals, while Senegal coach Aliou Cissé will look to frustrate and hit on the break. Expect a competitive first half before France’s quality likely tells.

France shrugged off a slow start and a controversial penalty decision to beat Senegal 3-1 in their opening match of the 2026 World Cup.
Kylian Mbappe scored the opener after he was denied a penalty despite VAR sending the referee to the monitor, before Bradley Barcola doubled France’s lead with a delightful chip.
Paris Saint-Germain teenager Ibrahim Mbaye pulled one back for Senegal in stoppage time, only for Mbappe to immediately restore the two-goal lead with a thumping strike.
