Thiruvananthapuram (Keralam) [India], June 16 : Self-enumeration for Census 2027 officially began in Keralam, with Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar and Chief Minister VD Satheesan becoming the first to complete the process in the state.
At a function held at Lok Bhavan, Governor Arlekar submitted his details through the Census portal and completed self-enumeration. CM VD Satheesan later completed the process at Mascot Hotel, marking the formal launch of self-enumeration activities in Keralam.
Governor Arlekar said the country was witnessing a major milestone through the digital Census 2027 and urged people across the state to cooperate with the exercise.
He said, "accurate information on households, occupations, businesses and living standards was essential for formulating welfare schemes and development policies. He also congratulated all officials involved in India's first fully digital census."

, opened on 1 April 2026, and the 15-day self-enumeration window has already begun for eight states and union territories including Odisha, Karnataka, Goa, Lakshadweep, Mizoram, Sikkim, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, and the New Delhi Municipal Council area.
This is India’s 16th census and the eighth since independence — delayed from its original 2021 schedule by the pandemic, and now arriving with a completely redesigned digital backbone. The government has approved ₹11,718.24 crore for the exercise, which will cover 36 states and union territories, roughly 6.4 lakh villages, and over 5,100 statutory towns.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:The ‘self-enumeration’ phase of the House listing and Housing Census, which forms the first phase of Census 2027, will be held in Kerala from June 16 to June 30.
During the period, citizens can fill out and submit the census details themselves on the portal https://se.census.gov.in. These details will be verified by the enumerator during the house visit phase from July 1 to July 30.
Addressing the media, K Biju, the state nodal officer for census operations, said full data protection and privacy will be ensured in the exercise, Only the aggregate data will be published and individual information will not be disclosed.
Explaining the process, Mitra T, director of Census Operations-Kerala, said the portal will generate an 11-digit ‘SE ID’ after submission of the details online by the public.
“This ‘SE ID’ should be shared with the enumerator during the house-to-house visit. This will make the enumeration process easier for both the public and enumerators,” she said. Kerala has begun preparations for the Census of India 2027, marking the start of the first population count in more than a decade after the postponement of Census 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Directorate of Census Operations (DCO), Kerala, submitted a detailed proposal to the state government on December 12, outlining preliminary administrative arrangements and the appointment of Census Officers at various levels.
As part of the initial groundwork, Kerala has started reorganising districts, towns, villages and enumeration blocks in preparation for the houselisting exercise scheduled for 2026 and the population enumeration planned for early 2027. The proposal envisages a two-phase census.

In a first, the national Census will be conducted digitally with the option of self-enumeration, said Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India, Mritunjay Kumar Narayan, on Monday (March 30).
