Samsung’s labor deal highlights a global movement of workers demanding a fair share of record AI-driven profits.
From Kenyan data annotators to Hollywood actors, laborers across the supply chain are challenging the surge in “AI billionaires” as automation continues to drive widespread job cuts.
The conflict has sparked broader debates on “citizen’s dividends” to ensure the wealth created by AI is distributed more equitably.

by nearly 48,000 workers this week, after executives agreed to a tentative deal over bonus payments. But the labor union’s demand for a bigger share of profits from the company’s semiconductor business has sparked questions — in South Korea and elsewhere — about who benefits from the AI industry, and whether its rewards should be shared more equitably.

Samsung Wage Deal Signed: Chip Workers Get 100x More Than Smartphone Staff
Samsung Electronicsformally signed its 2026 wage agreementon Wednesday, May 27, ending six months of negotiations that had brought the world's largest memory chipmaker within hours of an 18-day general strike — but the deal that averted that stoppage immediately opened two new disputes: a shareholder lawsuit challenging the bonus formula as illegal under Korean corporate law, and a public rift between chip workers who stand to earn up to $400,000 in bonuses this year and their colleagues in smartphones and home appliances who will receive roughly $4,000.
The signing ceremony took place at Samsung's The UniverSE training center in Giheung, Yongin, Gyeonggi Province, where Samsung Electronics Executive Vice President Yeo Myeong-gu and Choi Seung-ho, chair of the company's largest union, finalized the agreement following a six-day ratification vote. "Starting with the conclusion of this wage agreement, labor and management will work together with one mind to strengthen global competitiveness," Yeo said at the ceremony.
The agreement creates a new Special Management Performance Bonus exclusively for Samsung's…

Samsung Electronics Co. will distribute about 40 trillion won ($26.6 billion) to chip employees as a bonus for this year after the company struck a last-minute deal with labor unions to avert a strike.
Samsung employs 78,000 people in its semiconductors division. While bonus levels will vary, workers stand to get 513 million won on average, equivalent to $340,000, according to Bloomberg calculations based on proposed terms and estimates for 2026 operating profit. Samsung employees earned 158 million won on average in 2025, according to a company filing in March.
Other estimates, including by Yonhap News, calculated that employees in the booming memory division may be in line for individual payouts of around 600 million won. Samsung doesn’t disclose the exact number of employees in different semiconductor divisions.
The move follows rival SK Hynix Inc., which last year also agreed a bonus payout. The ac…

Record profits but angry workers: thousands of Samsung workers threatening strike over bonus dispute.
Thousands of Samsung Electronics workers protested on Thursday at its chip complex in South Korea, demanding higher bonuses and threatening to strike as the company sees record profits due to artificial intelligence driving up memory chip demand.

Holding signs and waving banners, the workers gathered at a factory compound in Pyeongtaek, amid a heavy police presence, shouting “make compensation transparent and remove maximum limits on bonuses!”
Union representatives put attendance at around 40,000 members, though police did not state an official count.
The protest unfolded the same day that Samsung's main competitor, SK Hynix, reported its best-ever quarterly results — record revenue and operating profit for the first three months of the year, which the company credited to soaring global i…

Samsung Electronics will distribute 40 trillion won, roughly $26.6 billion, as a chip bonus to employees in its semiconductor division.
The company reached a last-minute agreement with its South Korean workers’ union yesterday, and the numbers are genuinely staggering. Average payout per worker: 513 million won, or about $339,000, with some estimating closer to $396,000.
Under the tentative terms,
Samsung
will hand over 10.5% of profits as stock bonuses, plus 1.5% in cash. The union had originally demanded 15%, close enough, as the deal narrowly killed a strike that had been scheduled to begin May 21.
The program runs for ten years, provided Samsung hits specified profit targets. Employees can sell a third of their shares immediately, with the rest distributed in installments over two years.
Samsung didn’t exactly invent this playbook. SK Hynix cut a similar deal last September, committing 10% of annual operating profit directly to employees for the next decade, with no bonus caps.
Bloomberg
projects Samsung’s 2026 operating profits will multiply sevenfold to 330 trillion won, around $218 billion. The bonuses a…
