Ecuador 0-0 Curaçao (Jun 20, 2026) Game Analysis - ESPN
A heroic performance from goalkeeper Eloy Room created history for Curacao as they earned a first World Cup point by holding Ecuador to a 0-0 draw in Kansas City.
Room made 15 saves - the most by any goalkeeper in 90 minutes of a World Cup match since records began in 1966 - as he acted as a one-man barrier, with Dick Advocaat's brave side bouncing back from their 7-1 thrashing by Germany in their opening game.
The point, a historic result for a tiny nation with just 158,000 people, keeps their unlikely hopes of advancing through Group E alive and they will progress to the knockout stages if they can somehow beat Ivory Coast in their final match.
It was all down to a monumental performance from Room, who was in action from as early as the third minute when he denied Enner Valencia with a brilliant save.
Room was on a one-man mission as he kept out Gonzalo Plata's effort while again denying Valencia with an impressive low stop.
Curacao had their moments, with former Manchester United midfielder Tahith Chong wasting a three-on-two situation while Juninho Bacuna had a shot blocked in the penalty area.

Curacao goalkeeper Eloy Room was the hero against Ecuador on Saturday, keeping out a barrage of shots to help the tiny Caribbean nation claim their first ever World Cup point in a goalless draw that keeps alive their hopes of reaching the knockout phase.
Ecuador, who finished second in South American qualifying, had 28 shots, including 15 on target but Room stood firm in an astonishing display in Kansas City.
His 15 saves are the most on record, since 1966, by any goalkeeper a World Cup match that did not feature extra-time.
World Cup debutants Curacao, the smallest nation by population ever to qualify for the tournaments, slumped to a 7-1 defeat against Germany in their opening match but restored pride in the American Midwest.
Ecuador fans turned the Arrowhead Stadium, the home of NFL team Kansas City Chiefs, yellow, hugely outnumbering supporters of Curacao.
But Curacao had royalty on their side in the form of Dutch King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima. The island is an autonomous country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
Out of their 26-strong squad, managed by vastly experienced Dutch coach …

Eloy Room makes a save
Tiny Curacao battled to a 0-0 draw with Ecuador to earn the first World Cup point in the Caribbean island’s history on Saturday after an outstanding performance from goalkeeper Eloy Room enabled them to celebrate a landmark day.
Six days after being humbled 7-1 by Germany on their World Cup debut, Curacao – the smallest nation ever to reach the finals with a population of about 156,000 – produced a resilient display to frustrate the South Americans and keep alive their hopes of reaching the knockout stage.
The 37-year-old Room was the standout figure, making 15 saves that set a record for a 90-minute World Cup match, as they withstood sustained pressure before earning a result that ranks among the finest in their sporting history.
American Tim Howard holds the World Cup record for all-time saves with 16, but that was after extra time, in the U.S. loss to Belgium in the round of 16 in 2014.
The goalless draw that confirmed Germany as Group E winners was a blow for Ecuador — who arrived at the tournament on a 19-game unbeaten run — and their fans, who were left deflated as chances went begg…

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Curacao goalkeeper Eloy Room made 15 saves against a relentless Ecuador attack, allowing The Blue Wave to earn a 0-0 draw against the heavily favored La Tri on Saturday night and earn the tiny island nation its first-ever World Cup point.
The outcome also allowed Germany,
which beat Ivory Coast
earlier in the day, to clinch Group E.
The 37-year-old Room, whose shutout of Jamaica last November sent Curacao to its first World Cup, bounced back from
a 7-1 loss to Germany
with one of the finest performances by a goalkeeper in World Cup history. His save total was one shy of the record — since saves became an official stat in 1966 — of 16 set by Tim Howard of the U.S. against Belgium on July 1, 2014.
The draw doesn’t eliminate either team from knockout play, but it put Ecuador in dire shape going into its group finale. Those matches take place Thursday with Curacao facing Ivory Coast in Philadelphia and Ecuador playing Germany in New York.
