The United States and Iran are set to start a new round of talks in Switzerland on Sunday in a bid to finalise the Memorandum of Understanding signed last week. The teams have a timeframe of 60 days to resolve some of the more difficult issues such as what will happen to Iran's nuclear program and stockpiles of uranium. However the talks have already been shrouded in uncertainty as Israel and Hezbollah - not parties to the agreement - have continued to clash in Lebanon, with Tel Aviv refusing to withdraw from the territory. Representatives from the United States and Iran are scheduled to meet in Switzerland today (Friday) to formally launch the next phase of negotiations following the digital signing of a memorandum of understanding between US and Iran. The 14-point agreement, signed on Wednesday, establishes a framework for talks over a 60-day period. While a formal signing ceremony had initially been planned in Switzerland, the memorandum has already been signed electronically and entered into force.
Why Switzerland?
The talks are expected to take place at the Burgenstock Resort in Stansstad, near Lucerne in central Switzerland. The mountain-top resort is owned by Katara Hospitality, part of Qatar's sovereign wealth fund. Qatar was among the countries involved in mediating efforts to end the conflict.
