ANKARA, Turkey --Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen on Wednesday rejected renewed demands by President Donald Trump that the U.S. should take control of Greenland from NATO ally Denmark, saying that “Greenland is of course not for sale.”
“We hope that all, including all allies, will respect the Greenland people right for self-determination,” Frederiksen said ahead of a meeting of the leaders of NATO member countries in Turkey. “And we are sovereign states and we need everybody to respect our territorial integrity and our sovereignty.”
Trump reopened old wounds over Greenland on the eve of the meeting by insisting that the United States should controlthe semiautonomous island. NATO is founded on the principle that its 32 members will defend each others’ territory, not threaten to seize it.

ANKARA, Turkey, July 7 (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that Greenland should be controlled by the United States, not Denmark, as NATO leaders gathered for a summit in Turkey.
Trump's assertions that the U.S. must acquire or control Greenland, a semi-autonomous Danish territory, sparked tensions between Washington and Copenhagen - both founding NATO members - and more broadly across Europe. The issue has since moved to a diplomatic track.

Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy has said Donald Trump’s renewed threats over Greenland feel “rhetorical rather than real”.
The US president reignited a major diplomatic row on the eve of the Nato summit this week by insisting that the US should control Greenland, which belongs to Denmark, and suggesting America could pull all of its troops out of Europe in retaliation.
Mr Trump struck a conciliatory tone at the end of the summit in Ankara, Turkey, saying fellow alliance members were “answering the call” on military funding.
He then said a “deal on Greenland” would play a key role in any decision about US troop numbers in Europe as he spoke to reporters on board the new Air Force One on his way back.
Mr Lammy told a conference on international affairs at Chatham…

Denmark has vowed to defend its territory after President Donald Trump insisted again that the United States should control Greenland, upending a Nato summit in Turkey meant to be a show of strength and unity.
Denmark’s Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, said her country is “ready to defend every inch of Nato including our own territory” in the event of an attack, and would rely on Nato allies to honour their commitment to defend each other.
“We hope that all, including all allies, will respect the Greenland people’s right for self-determination,” Ms Frederiksen said ahead of the meeting of Nato leaders. “Greenland is of course not for sale.”
Mr Trump had reopened old wounds on the eve of the meeting by insisting that the United States should control Greenland, a semi-autonomous Danish territory.
