Entebbe Raid 1976: The Day Israel Refused To Leave Its People Behind
Entebbe Raid 1976: The Day Israel Refused To Leave Its People Behind
On June 27, 1976, Israel found itself thrust into a terrifying hostage crisis that would grip the world. An Air France flight from Tel Aviv to Paris, carrying 248 passengers, was hijacked shortly after a stopover in Athens. Amount the four hijackers, two of them were the members of the left-wing German Baader-Meinhof Gang, and two from the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP).
The flight was asked not to follow its route, rather diverted to the unexpected and far-flung location of Entebbe Airport in Uganda, back then it was under the authoritarian rule of Idi Amin. He was a man who would accept no other opinion, a dictator, but he too was humans, had feelings. He sympathized with the Palestinian cause.

Nearly five decades after the Entebbe Raid, the operation continues to resonate as one of the boldest rescue missions in military history, not only for its cinematic execution but for the layers of diplomacy, deception, sacrifice, and split-second decisions that defined it. Behind the headlines of heroism lie the untold complexities: the intelligence coups, the ethical dilemmas, the international fallout, and the haunting loss of Yoni

1. Mossad’s Critical Intelligence Role: The Israeli intelligence agency Mossad gathered vital information by debriefing released hostages, including Patricia Martell, who faked a miscarriage to be released in Benghazi. Her detailed account of the hijackers’ numbers and weapons was crucial for planning the raid.

The ceremony marking the 50th anniversary of Operation Entebbe took place in an understated setting for one of the most storied military operations in modern history: a small lounge in the offices of the Peres Center for Peace and Innovation, with no more than two dozen people in attendance.
Yet the modest event in Tel Aviv suited Sorin Hershcu, the former paratrooper being honoured for his role in the 1976 rescue of more than 100 hostages from a hijacked Air France plane in Uganda.
Hershcu was the most seriously wounded Israeli soldier in the operation; now 71 years old, he is a man with little appetite for self-mythology and was among the quietest people in the lounge, which was filled with other survivors of the operation.
Among them were several of the former hostage “children of Entebbe”, whose easy banter with and about Hershcu gave the gathering the feel of an old family reunion rather than an award ceremony.
“They insisted on giving me the award,” he said, speaking in a soft register forced on him by the injury he sustained at Entebbe.
“I would have been happy for them to give it to other soldiers …

Operation Entebbe: How Israel’s 1976 hostage rescue unfolded
In a remarkable display of tactical prowess, Israeli commandos executed Operation Thunderbolt under the cover of night at Entebbe Airport, successfully liberating over 100 hostages from terrorists. This high-stakes rescue unfolded after failed diplomatic negotiations, leading to a fierce debate over national sovereignty. The release of previously classified documents sheds light on the contentious discussions that paved the way for this audacious military intervention.

Israeli hostages return to Entebbe 50 years after historic rescue
Three former Israeli hostages returned to Entebbe nearly 50 years after the 1976 hijacking.
The survivors revisited the old airport terminal where they were held as children.
Tzipi Cohen Gonen recalled losing her father during the hostage crisis.
Uganda said the site remains an important reminder of peace, resilience and international cooperation.
Nearly 50 years after they were held hostage at Entebbe International Airport, three Israeli survivors of the 1976 hijacking have returned to the old terminal where one of the world's most famous rescue missions unfolded.
For Benny Davidson, Shay Gross and Tzipi Cohen Gonen, the visit was more than a journey into history. It was a return to a place that shaped their childhoods.
Davidson was 13 years old when the Air France aircraft he was travelling on was hijacked. Gross was six. Gonen was eight.
The trio visited the old terminal on June 16, 2026, and retraced the steps of frightened passengers who were held there for days after the aircraft was diverted to Uganda.
The Acting Director of Defence Public Information, Col Chris Magezi, received them.

TEL AVIV — For the survivors of Operation Entebbe, marking the 50th anniversary was less a celebration of one of Israel’s most mythologized military operations than a reckoning with the distance between the country that rescued them and the one that failed to prevent another mass hostage crisis decades later.
About two dozen of those rescued at Entebbe and their relatives gathered on Monday at the Peres Center for Peace and Innovation in Jaffa for an event honoring Sorin Hershcu, the Israeli paratrooper gravely wounded in the 1976 raid. Teasing and jokes repeatedly broke through the formalities, giving the room the feel of an unruly extended family.
The hijacking began when an Air France flight from Tel Aviv to Paris carrying 246 passengers was seized after a stop in Athens by terro…
