ÉVIAN-LES-BAINS, France: The United States may soon bring back sanctions on Russian oil shipments after President Donald Trump and other leaders at the Group of Seven summit on June 16 decided to refocus attention on the war in Ukraine.
In recent weeks, the conflict with Iran had taken attention away from Ukraine, but after announcing a deal to end the three-and-a-half-month war in the Gulf, Trump said he now wants to turn his focus back to Ukraine.
He said Iran would soon be "in the rearview mirror."
When asked if he would restore sanctions on Russia that had been relaxed to help lower oil prices, Trump said the restrictions could be reintroduced now that more oil is flowing through the Strait of Hormuz.
"Soon we'll be able to do that because the oil is now flowing," Trump said. "We're in a position to do that soon."
In March, the U.S. had temporarily eased some sanctions on certain Russian oil shipments as oil prices rose sharply. This relief was extended as the Middle East conflict continued.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy joined G7 leaders for discussions on the war, though the meeting lasted only about 75 minutes.

Evian:
President Donald Trump on Tuesday said the US will soon be able to reimpose sanctions against Russian oil, at the G7 summit where leaders are seeking to ratchet up pressure against Moscow over its invasion of Ukraine.
"Soon we will be able to do that as the oil is now flowing" through the Strait of Hormuz after the deal with Iran to end the Middle East war, Trump said. Washington had imposed and then extended a sanctions waiver for Russian oil cargoes already at sea, troubling European allies.

EU targets Russian energy with new sanctions, welcomes Trump ... - CNBC
The European Union on Thursday launched a fresh round of sanctions against Russia for its war in Ukraine, joining the U.S. by targeting Moscow's energy infrastructure.
The package of measures, which member states approved on Wednesday evening, includes a ban on Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports.
It comes shortly after U.S. President Donald Trump,in a major policy shift, announced new sanctions against Rosneft and Lukoil, two of Russia's largest oil companies.
Trump told reporters on Wednesday that he felt it was the appropriate time to impose the measures, describing the sanctions as "tremendous" before adding that he hoped they wouldn't be in place for long.
Kaja Kallas, the EU's high representative for foreign affairs and security policy, welcomed the Trump administration's sanctions on Russian oil companies, describing the policy as a "signal of strength."
Speaking to CNBC's "Europe Early Edition" on Thursday, Kallas said: "It is really depriving Russia of the means to fund this war and this is necessary to end this war."

A temporary U.S. sanctions waiver allowing the sale and delivery of Russian seaborne crude oil expired for the third time on Wednesday, following comments made by U.S. President Donald Trump earlier this week that his administration is unlikely to renew it.
Speaking at the G7 summit in France on Tuesday, Trump
said
his administration would “soon” be able to reimpose sanctions on Russian crude
“because the oil is now flowing” through the Strait of Hormuz.
“We took sanctions off because obviously we’re not looking to impede the oil,” Trump said, adding that the White House is now “in a position” to let the temporary general license lapse.
Global oil prices initially skyrocketed in March after Iran effectively blockaded the Strait of Hormuz in retaliation for U.S.-Israeli military strikes.
Around a fifth of the world’s oil and gas supplies normally pass through the narrow waterway.
To help mitigate the largest-ever disruption to global energy markets, the Trump administration issued an emergency 30-day general license in March to permit the transit of R…

Trump’s statements come after different world leaders at the summit met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to talk about the Russia-Ukraine war, which has been going on for 5 years.
