UN rights council to hold emergency debate amid fears of imminent ... Sudanese displaced people in the Al- Mina Al Muwahad camp in El-Obeid, Sudan, 10 December 2025. (Médecins Sans Frontières/© Abdulmonam Eassa) The UN Human Rights Council is set to hold an emergency session on Friday to address the escalating crisis in the capital of North Kordofan, El Obeid, as fears mount of an RSF assault leading to "large-scale atrocities". The United Kingdom, backed by Germany, the Netherlands and Ireland, submitted on Monday a formal request for an emergency debate on the escalating crisis in El Obeid at the Human Rights Council, which is currently meeting in Geneva. In a letter addressed to the council president, the group cited a “threat of potential escalation on the ground”, warning that “500,000 civilians are at risk of being targeted in large-scale atrocities”. El-Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan, has endured 18 months of “siege-like conditions” imposed by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces as its power struggle with the Sudanese army rages on for the fourth consecutive year. Sudan: atrocity alert as RSF rings El Obeid - CounterVortex
Sudan: atrocity alert as RSF rings El Obeid - CounterVortex Warnings are mounting that Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces ( RSF ) could carry out new mass atrocities as the paramilitary army prepares an assault on the government-held city of El Obeid in North Kordofan state. After the UN secretary-general and human rights chief sounded the alarm earlier this month, the African Union and several governments this week also warned of the extreme danger facing civilians if the UAE-backed rebels capture the city. The warnings have drawn comparisons with El Fasher and the nearby Zam Zam displacement camp in Darfur, which saw general massacres after they fell to the RSF last year. Reports suggest the RSF has moved substantial reinforcements to its siege of El Obeid, while stepping up drone strikes on the city. A crossroads linking RSF-controlled Darfur with government-held Sudan, El Obeid was under RSF siege until the Sudanese Armed Forces broke the blockade last year, but it is now being encircled once again. ICRC warns of surging attacks on civilian infrastructure in Sudan
ICRC warns of surging attacks on civilian infrastructure in Sudan The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) issued a grave warning Monday about escalating attacks on vital civilian infrastructure in Sudan. According to the ICRC, these assaults have severely disrupted access to essential services such as clean water and electricity, affecting millions of people across the conflict-ridden nation. “We are witnessing a disturbing pattern of attacks on critical civilian infrastructure so essential for people’s survival,” stated Dorsa Nazemi-Salman, ICRC’s operations head in Sudan. She called for all parties involved in the ongoing conflict to protect key facilities, including power plants, water stations, and dams. Since the outbreak of war in April 2023, Sudan has faced a brutal confrontation between general Abdel Fattah al-Burhan’s army and his former deputy, Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, head of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The war has claimed tens of thousands of lives, displaced over 12 million, and pushed many to the brink of famine. The country’s already fragile infrastructure has been further devastated by recent large-scale attacks on dams and oil refineries. The ICRC emp…
