Sony will pull over 500 movies and shows from PlayStation
Who doesn’t love a good movie? Unfortunately, if you bought your favourite movies digitally on PlayStation, there’s a chance that you’ll lose access to them come this September 1st, 2026. Sony has announced that over 500 films and series, including Terminator 2, Rambo and many others, will no longer be available to watch, due to “licensing agreements.”
It’s not unusual for games to be delisted from online stores. The difference is that if you’ve bought those games, they remain in players’ libraries. You can redownload them whenever you want. These movies, all content from Studio Canal, will just be gone.
Sony’s official announcement
, which was initially emailed to purchasers but can now be viewed online, makes no mention of any refunds.
“From September 1, 2026, due to our content licensing agreements, you will no longer be able to access your previously purchased content from Studio Canal, and it will be removed from your video library,” reads the matter-of-fact statement.
Unsurprisingly, as reported by
Kotaku
, this has caused quite a stir. Sony stopped selling movies via PlayStation back in 2021, but to effectively remov…

TL;DR:
Sony will remove all Studio Canal movies and series from European PlayStation libraries by September 1, 2026, due to expiring content licenses, making previously purchased titles inaccessible without refunds. This highlights that digital purchases are license-based and can disappear, unlike physical media ownership.

The shift from physical media to digital libraries and streaming has been a major one for the entertainment industry, whether you're talking about games, movies, or music. Thanks to the convenience of digital media, the era of physical media is ending, or at the very least, becoming a niche market for collectors. However, it's worth remembering that a digital purchase and accessing a digital library are very different things from a shelf full of discs. It's license-based, and it can disappear at any moment.

Building a digital library full of movies and television shows comes with several distinct advantages, but it also carries a few significant caveats that are becoming increasingly apparent. One of the primary reasons that people may find it appealing is convenience; it allows viewers to access their collections across multiple devices without physical storage. However, the …

Hundreds of TV episodes and movies will be removed from PlayStation Store accounts on 1 September
People had bought the movies and shows
No apologies, let alone compensation, from Sony
One of the best things about Blu-ray discs is that you don't need to worry that
Sony
will sneak into your home in the middle of the night and take them away.
Unfortunately you can't say the same about digital purchases: Sony is scrubbing hundreds of movies and TV show episodes purchased on the PlayStation Store from people's collections with no compensation. Come September, they're gone.
The
list of affected movies and shows is on the Sony website
and includes the remastered
Terminator 2: Judgement Day
,
Gomorrah
, the Rambo movies and many more. The problem is the end of a licensing agreement between Sony and StudioCanal, a major producer and distributor of movies and shows.
