Denis Alipov has said smaller and faster versions of the weapon are in the works
India and Russia are jointly developing smaller hypersonic versions of the BrahMos missile, whose lethal precision was on display against Pakistani targets last year.
BrahMos is "an emblematic example" of bilateral defense cooperation between Russia and India, Moscow's envoy to New Delhi, Denis Alipov, said while marking the 25th anniversary of the missile's first test launch.
Named after the Brahmaputra and Moskva rivers, the BrahMos is among the fastest supersonic cruise missiles in the world.
"Today, work is underway to develop smaller and hypersonic variants, which will further enhance the Indian Armed Forces' multi-domain strike capabilities," he said Wednesday.
BrahMos is a supersonic missile with speeds reaching up to Mach 3, or three times the speed of sound. It is now available in land-, sea-, and air-launched variants.
Alipov recalled the use of the missile in Operation Sindoor, India's brief military clash with Pakistan last year. Some 15-20 BrahMos missiles were fired by India in the clash, damaging several major Pakistani air bases.

Unlike traditional subsonic cruise missiles, the BrahMos maintains continuous supersonic speed, designed to overwhelm modern air defenses through speed and compressed reaction time.
Indeed, the BrahMos represents a major shift away from stealth-focused cruise missiles toward brute-force high-speed penetration.

India is pressing ahead with its work on missile defense, conducting its latest successful test last November and preparing to test a new kind of interceptor early this year.
In its Nov. 23 announcement of the test earlier that day, India said it had demonstrated the ability to intercept multiple incoming missiles. The test, which was the latest in a series dating to 2006, follows several tests in 2012 of nuclear-capable ballistic missiles, including the successful launch in April of the 5,000-kilometer-range Agni-5. (SeeACT, May 2012.)
India also has tested the sea-launched version of the hypersonic Brahmos cruise missile, jointly developed with Russia. In addition, air- and submarine-launched versions of the Brahmos missile are in development.
Indian media reports suggest that a test of a new high-altitude anti-missile interceptor will occur in January and that India may soon test a submarine-laun…

Defence minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday gave a gentle reminder to Pakistan of the formidable range and capabilities of BrahMos supersonic cruise missile, touted as one of the world's fastest and advanced in its category.
Cementing BrahMos missile's reputation as a critical pillar of India's defence arsenal,Rajnath Singh on Saturday led the rolloutof the first missiles from the new integration and testing facility in Uttar Pradesh's Lucknow.
Marking the occasion, Rajnath Singh issued a stern warning to Pakistan, saying that the entire country is now within the reach of Brahmos. "Every inch of Pakistan's territory is now within the reach of BrahMos. Operation Sindoor is proof that victory has become a habit for us, and now we must further enhance our capabilities. The operation was just a trailer. It has made Pakistan realise what might follow," Rajnath Singh said, referencing the four-day military operation in May during which BrahMos was used to strike targets across the border.

India’s quest for the BrahMos-2 hypersonic cruise missile has come face-to-face with some grim reality checks, and BrahMos Aerospace, which was to develop the missile in partnership with Russia, has reportedly paused its development.
Three factors appear to have weighed in on the decision to push back BrahMos-2 development:
The high cost of the BrahMos-2 missile
The high precision and air defense (AD) penetration capability of the BrahMos missile
Russia’s reluctance to transfer hypersonic flight scramjet engine technology
The BrahMos-2 is projected to cost approximately $12.5 million. In contrast, BrahMos-1 variant costs range from $3 million to $4.5 million.
The BrahMos-1 established a good record of accuracy and penetration during Op Sindoor. Similarly, Russia’s Onyx missile, a BrahMos-1 analog, has established a good track record in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
The penetration capability of the hypersonic BrahMos-2 will be marginally higher than that of BrahMos, but not enough to justify its much higher cost. Under the circumstances, it would make more sense for India to inc…

India showcased its military might when the Indian armed forces unleashed hell on Pakistan-based terror camps in Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir and Pakistan, under Operation Sindoor, launched in retaliation for the dastardly Pahalgam terror attack, which resulted in the death of 26 people.
One of the major components of India’s precision strikes was the indigenously developed BrahMos missiles, designed by the state-owned BrahMos Aerospace in collaboration with Russia. The BrahMos missile can hit targets as far as 500 kilometres.
The BrahMos missile is well compared to the US’ much sought-after Tomahawk missile. Both Tomahawk and BrahMos are long-range, precision-guided cruise missiles. Both can hit targets with exceptional accuracy and can be launched from multiple platforms, including ships, submarines and land-based launchers.
Let us take a look at how the US’ Tomahawk and India’s BrahMos missiles fare against each other.

is rapidly becoming one of the country's biggest defence export success stories. Days after Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh revealed that Vietnam has signed a deal to procure the missile system, attention has once again turned to the weapon that is helping New Delhi expand its strategic footprint across Southeast Asia.
The announcement comes after the Philippines became the first foreign customer for BrahMos in 2022. Indonesia is also expected to join the growing list of operators, with negotiations reportedly nearing completion. Together, these deals could place one of the world's fastest operational cruise missiles in the hands of several countries facing maritime disputes in the South China Sea. The Indian Navy on Tuesday successfully test-fired the anti-ship version of the supersonic cruise missile, BrahMos from stealth destroyer INS Ranvijay. The missile destroyed the target located in the Bay of Bengal after performing “high-level” and “extremely complex” maneuvers.
BrahMos Goes Global; After Indonesia, Brazil Could Arm Its Saab Gripen Jets With The ‘Lethal’ Missile
The launch comes a week after the Indian Army successfully launched its BrahMos supersonic cruise missile on 24 November, hitting the target in the Bay of Bengal with pinpoint accuracy.
The Indian Navy has adopted the BrahMos as its standard ship-launched cruise missile as the navy’s all frigates and destroyers are now being built to carry the BrahMos in vertical-launch canisters — eight missiles in each frigate and 16 in each destroyer.
Since the beginning of the border stand-off with China in May, India has succeeded in testing multiple missiles meant for variable strike platforms and from a different medium.
