Israeli minister Itamar Ben Gvir under investigation in Italy over Gaza flotilla | World News
Italian prosecutors put Israel's far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir under investigation over the treatment of activists who were part of a Gaza flotilla last month, a judicial source said on Monday.
The source, who asked not to be named, confirmed earlier reports by Italian news agencies and said Ben-Gvir was being investigated on suspicion of torture and kidnapping of Italian citizens who were among the activists.
If the probe determines charges are warranted, prosecutors could lodge a formal request for trial.
In response to the Italian investigation, Ben-Gvir said in a statement: "I will not shy away from one investigation or another and will continue to stand proudly alongside our fighters."
Israel and Ben-Gvir have faced mounting international criticism after the minister in late May released a video showing detained Gaza activists kneeling with their hands bound after Israel intercepted the aid flotilla in international waters.
Organisers said the 430 activists detained by Israeli police included citizens of Italy and South Korea.

TRT World - Italy opens probe into Israel's Ben-Gvir over Gaza flotilla activist treatment
Italian prosecutors have launched an investigation into Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir over his treatment of activists from a Gaza-bound humanitarian flotilla during their detention,ANSAnews agency reported on Monday.
The probe, led by the Rome Prosecutor’s Office, focuses on the actions of Itamar Ben-Gvir toward activists while they were being held at the Port of Ashdod with their hands tied behind their backs.
The investigators are also examining the wider conduct of Israeli authorities during the boarding and detention of the activists, including several Italian nationals.
Prosecutors are reportedly assessing allegations that include claims of torture and kidnapping.
Earlier, Rome prosecutors opened a separate investigation into the detention of Italian nationals during Israel's interception of a Gaza aid flotilla in international waters off Greece in April, following three formal complaints.
The latest Israeli attack on the Gaza-bound Global Sumud humanitarian flotilla in international waters happened in mid-May. Live broadcasts from the flotilla showed Israeli n…

Italy's Meloni Urges Netanyahu to Respect International Law in Gaza
Israel must respect international law in its military operation in Gaza, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said on Wednesday, calling the humanitarian situation in the Palestinian enclave increasingly "dramatic and unjustifiable".
Israel invaded Gaza after the Hamas-led attack on southern Israeli communities on October 7, 2023, and has recently announced plans for an expanded offensive to defeat Hamas.
"Over the past months I have spoken with Prime Minister (Benjamin) Netanyahu on several occasions, and the conversations have often been difficult," Meloni told a question time session in the Italian lower house of parliament.
More than 52,000 Palestinians have been killed in the Israeli offensive, according to local health authorities. The military campaign has left Gaza on the brink of famine, aid groups and international agencies say.
"I have always recalled the urgency of finding a way to end the hostilities and respect international law and international humanitarian law. A request that I renew today," Meloni said.
Israeli strikes intensified this week, killing dozens in northern Gaza, locals have said.

Video shows Itamar Ben-Gvir taunting dozens of bound pro-Palestine activists.
LONDON -- Israel's government is facing a global outcry over video showing its far-right national security minister appearing to flaunt the rough treatment of foreign pro-Palestine activists detained from a Gazaprotest flotilla.
National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir on Wednesday posted the video on X in which he appears to revel as dozens of the detained activists are displayed, with their hands bound and kneeling face down in stress positions. In the video, Ben-Gvir waves a flag of Israel over the activists, at another point smiling as a bound woman is roughly shoved down by masked Israeli security officers.
Walking among the detainees, Ben-Gvir tells the guards around him "don’t be bothered by their screams."
Most of Israel’s key western allies have expressed outrage over the video, condemning it in unusually strong terms. The U.K., France, Italy, Spain, Canada, the Netherlands and Belgium have summoned Israel’s ambassador over the controversy.
Britain's foreign secretary Yvette Cooper wrote she was "truly appalled" at th…
