WASHINGTON (TNND) —President Donald Trump saidthe United States' peace deal with Iran is now "complete"and announced the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz to international shipping.
He shared the news on Sunday -- which marked his 80th birthday -- ina Truth Social post.
The news comes one day afterTrump said a deal was expected to be signed, vowing that the agreement would prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon while reopening the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important energy transit routes.
The U.S. previously said it would ease its blockade of Iranian ports as the Strait reopens, and would agree to relax sanctions to allow Iran to sell more of its oil and strengthen its battered economy.
It was not immediately clear whether Iranian officials had formally confirmed Trump's announcement, but Iranian state media reported key mediator Pakistan’s announcement of the deal.
Trump on Saturday said the agreement is "the exact opposite" from the 2015 nuclear accord negotiated when former President Barack Obama was in office. Trump has long criticized that deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action,…

Washington had previously indicated it would ease its blockade of Iranian ports as traffic resumes through the strait and relax sanctions to allow Tehran to boost oil exports and shore up its battered economy.
US President Donald Trump confirmed that a deal had been reached with Iran and said he had authorized an end to the US naval blockade of Iranian ports in the Strait of Hormuz.
“Congratulations to all!” he wrote on social media, without providing details. He added, “Ships of the World, start your engines. Let the oil flow!”

Iran, US agree to halt war and reopen Hormuz
The United States and Iran have reportedly agreed to terms to end their war and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, news that brought relief to markets — although the pact may hinge on an end to hostilities in Lebanon and defers talks on Tehran’s nuclear program.
While still a framework, the deal marked the biggest breakthrough towards resolving the conflict that has killed thousands and upended energy markets since it began with joint U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran in February.

According to a senior US official, Trump and Vice President JD Vance signed the memorandum on behalf of Washington, while Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf signed for Tehran. The agreement reportedly commits both sides to ending the US blockade of Iranian ports, reopening the Strait of Hormuz and commencing 60 days of negotiations aimed at resolving outstanding issues, including the future of Iran's nuclear programme.

Bringing the crucial waterway, which is responsible for about a quarter of the world’s oil trade, back to pre-war traffic levels would mark a significant step towards easing months of economic tensions sparked by the US-Israeli strikes in February.

Australia has welcomed the US president's announcement of a deal to end the war in Iran and reopen a critical trading waterway after months of fighting and numerous false starts in negotiations.
Donald Trump and the Pakistani prime minister, whose country has been mediating talks, announced the US and Iran had struck a peace agreement which also covers Lebanon, with an official signing ceremony to take place in Switzerland on June 19.
The agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and resume oil trade was a positive step forward, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Foreign Minister Penny Wong said in a joint statement.
"We are pleased the agreement between the US and Iran includes steps towards reopening the Strait of Hormuz and the restoration of freedom of navigation," they said.
"While full recovery will take time, restoring this vital trade corridor is essential to easing pressure on energy prices and economises, including in our region."
While the peace was welcome, more work was needed to secure a "durable and lasting peace", the pair said.
"Iran must address longstanding concerns about its nuclear program and the threat it poses to international security," they said.

The signing of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the US and Iran on Monday has been welcomed by the international community after a devastating, three-month war. The agreement was announced on June 14, President Donald Trump’s birthday, but the biggest beneficiary, experts say, is the Iranian regime.

Trump, Pezeshkian Sign Deal Aimed At Ending Iran War
US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masud Pezeshkian have signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at ending the conflict that has roiled the Middle East since late February.
The agreement was signed by Trump on June 17 at the Palace of Versailles following the Group of Seven 7 (G7) summit. A video shared by the White House and French President Emmanuel Macron on X shows Trump signing the document.
"This was not easy," Trump said as he signed the agreement, while host French President Emmanuel Macron and other guests applauded.
"This agreement paves the way for lasting peace and allows the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz," Macron said on X.
Iran's state news agency, IRNA, released photos on June 18 showing Iranian President Masud Pezeshkian also signing the agreement.
In the photos, the Iranian president holds the pages of the agreement up to the cameras, with both his signature and that of the US president visible. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei later confirmed that the document had "been finalized with the signatures of the presidents."

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, whose nation had been mediating the peace talks, made the announcement Sunday afternoon that all military operations across all fronts, including in Lebanon, would end immediately.
President Donald Trump echoed Sharif’s post soon afterward and said the U.S. would end the blockade of Iranian ports. He went on to celebrate the fact the Strait of Hormuz would be opening soon. He later hedged and indicated that the vital waterway may not open until after the official signing ceremony, which will be held Friday in Switzerland.
