SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — DemocratXavier Becerraadvanced to the general election for California governor Friday after pitching himself as an experienced choice to lead the nation’s most populous state and succeed Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom.
Becerra leaned on his more than 35 years in public office, including as state attorney general and U.S. health secretary, to argue that he was the most qualified candidate in a crowded field.
“The people of the great state of California, in the greatest nation on earth, have spoken — loudly and proudly,” Becerra said in a statement. “We are never backing down. November, here we come.”

As of Friday evening with about 66% of the expected vote counted, Becerra, the former secretary of Health and Human Services in the Biden administration, had about 26.7% of the vote, according to the AP tally.
Republican Steve Hilton, a former Fox News host, followed with 26.4% of the vote. Democrat Tom Steyer, an activist and billionaire, had 21% of the vote.
California hosts non-partisan primaries, which means all candidates are listed on one primary ballot and the top two candidates advance to the general election, regardless of party affiliation.

His opponent in November has yet to be determined. Former Fox News host Steve Hilton, a Republican, and billionaire activist Tom Steyer, a Democrat are the leading candidates for second place in the all-party primary.
With two-thirds of the expected vote tallied, Becerra was taking about 27% to Hilton’s 26%, while Steyer was at 21%.
