University of Melbourne toppled from top spot in global rankings
The University of Melbourne has lost its spot as Australia’s top-rated university on one of the major global tertiary rankings, amid warnings the nation’s reputation as a world-class study destination could be at risk.
On Thursday, the University of New South Wales (UNSW) claimed the No.1 spot among Australian institutions in the QS World University Rankings 2027 for the first time, ascending to 19th globally ahead of the University of Melbourne at 22nd.
University of Melbourne interim vice chancellor Glyn Davis said they were pleased to maintain a position ranked among the world’s top 25 institutions, having placed 19th last year.
Davis, who was appointed to the interim position in January following thedeath of Emma Johnston, said the university remained focused on its work.
“As we prepare for the arrival of ournext vice chancellor, Professor Carolyn Evans, we remain focused on strengthening our global partnerships, advancing excellence in teaching and research, and ensuring our students are equipped to thrive in a rapidly changing world,” Davis said.

The University of NSW has toppled the University of Melbourne as the best-ranked Australian university in the prestigious Quacquarelli Symonds ranking survey for the first time.
The QS rankings, released on Thursday, show that most Australian universities have improved significantly over the past decade – UNSW has climbed 30 places to sit at 19th in the world, the University of Melbourne has gone from No.42 to No.22, the University of Sydney has moved from No.46 to No.28, while the fourth-placed Australian National University has slipped from No.22 to No.29.
Rankings are important to universities because they help attract international students, who provide asignificant revenue stream.
There have also been improvements outside Australia’s prestigious universities – the University of Technology Sydney leapt from 193rd place to 85th in the past decade, while Melbourne’s RMIT has gone from 252nd to 119th.
“Australia’s 2027 results point to a higher education system competing with real confidence on the world stage. Its reputation among both academics and employers is strengthening, while its ability to attract in…
STUDENT engaged diplomatically in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia
A new Australian university has emerged as the country's best performer in a key global ranking, as the country's tertiary institutions continue to excel.
The University of New South Wales has overtaken the University of Melbourne to become Australia's top achiever in the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings for 2027.
UNSW came in at 19th in the prestigious list released on Thursday, while Melbourne slipped behind to 22nd.
It is the first time a NSW university has claimed the country's top spot, which was dominated by the Australian National University for nearly two decades until Melbourne took over in 2023.
This year, ANU was ranked 29th behind the University of Sydney, with the country's oldest sandstone institution sliding three places from the previous year to 28th.
UNSW scored the highest in the country for employment outcomes and sustainability, and placed third nationally for both reputation among employers and richness and diversity of international research partnerships.
The university has climbed 30 places in the QS rankings since 2017, which UNSW Professor Verity Firth put down to a focus on research, as well as work-integrated learning.
