Dawud Al Ansari says 'Oman committed to de-escalation and peace in the region at any cost'
As French President Emmanuel Macron meets Sultan Haitham bin Tariq of Oman amid efforts to de-escalate tensions in the Middle East, François Picard welcomes Dawud Al Ansari, a geopolitics and energy analyst. As diplomacy in the Gulf is once again being tested by renewed military tensions, Al Ansari offers a nuanced assessment from an Omani perspective, arguing that Oman is playing an increasingly valuable strategic role. Rather than portraying the Sultanate as simply another Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) monarchy, he contends that this small but influential nation has deliberately cultivated its influence through neutrality, mediation and pragmatic diplomacy. While regional security remains fragile despite recent agreements, he argues that Oman will continue to prioritise stability, free navigation through the Strait of Hormuz and dialogue between regional adversaries.

The French president, Emmanuel Macron, announced this Monday the start of a joint military operation with Oman aimed at clearing mines in the Strait of Hormuz, a key maritime corridor that links the Persian Gulf with the Indian Ocean and which was blocked by Iran in the context of the US and Israeli military offensive against Tehran.
"We are working together to reduce tensions in the Middle East. We have decided to collaborate, along with our partners, in clearing mines in the Strait of Hormuz to secure maritime routes and guarantee free and unconditional transit," Macron stressed.
The announcement was made during the official visit to Paris of the Sultan of Oman, Haitham bin Tariq, on which occasion both leaders agreed on the need for a Strait of Hormuz of "free navigation," "without conditions or restrictions."
According to a joint Franco-Omani statement released after the meeting in the French capital, the two parties have decided to "move towards freedom of navigation in the future and carry out joint mine-clearing operations."
