Karmelo Anthony, 19, is facing murder charges for the April 2, 2025, stabbing of Austin Metcalf — a 17-year-old student from a rival school — during an altercation at a track meet in Frisco, Texas.
Prosecutors wrapped up their case by calling Collin County’s chief medical examiner, Dr. Elizabeth Ventura, who told jurors that Metcalf’s cause of death was a stab wound to the chest and that the manner was homicide.
As Ventura presented horrific images, several members of the jury audibly gasped, while one woman put her hand over her mouth.

It was a case that dividedTexasand beyond, pored over by pundits for months and leaving many asking what justice looked like for acrimethat quickly became a racial flashpoint.
Yet on Tuesday, it took a Collin County jury in Dallas' suburbs just under three hours toconvict 19-year-old Karmelo Anthonyof murdering Austin Metcalf, 17, at a high school track meet last year.
Anthony, who was also 17 at the time, stabbed Metcalf after a confrontation in a school tent – that much was never disputed, Anthony admitted to police he killed Metcalf minutes afterwards.
The case ultimately hinged on whether Anthony was acting in self-defense, a theory the jury rejected resolutely, along with two lesser charges of manslaughter and sudden passion.
The same 12-member panel (comprised of white, Asian, Hispanic and Indian jurors – but crucially no black jurors, something Anthony's defenders say was an injustice) also sentenced him to 35 years in prison.
Despite all the outside attention on the case, jurors co…

Civil rights attorney Ben Crump comparedKarmelo Anthony's murder conviction and sentence to another Texas school stabbing case, arguing the outcomes reflect “two different standards of justice.”
Anthony, 19, was recently sentenced to 35 years in prison after a Collin County jury found him guilty of murder in the fatal stabbing of fellow studentAustin Metcalfduring a 2025 high school track meet.
Prosecutors argued that Anthony intentionally stabbed Metcalf during a confrontation. His defense team maintained that he acted in self-defense, but the Texas jury rejected the defense.
The sentence sparked protests outside the Collin County courthouse. Anthony's supporters and family members claimed racial bias influenced the prosecution and jury selection process. Some supporters pointed to the absence of Black jurors on the final panel.

Karmelo Anthony was indicted for the killing of Austin Metcalf.
A Texas grand jury has indicted a teenager for first-degree murder in thefatal stabbingof another teen at a track meet, in a case prosecutors said has "shaken" the community.
The deadly stabbing occurred at a Frisco Independent School District stadium on April 2 during a track and field championship involving multiple schools in the district.
Karmelo Anthony, a then-17-year-old student at Frisco Centennial High School, was arrested and charged in the murder of Austin Metcalf, 17, an 11th grader at Frisco Memorial High School who police said was stabbed during an altercation in the bleachers at the meet.
A grand jury has since indicted Anthony for first-degree murder, Collin County District Attorney Greg Willis announced Tuesday. Willis said his team had presented evidence for several weeks before the Collin County grand jury returned the indictment. A trial schedule is yet to be set.
"We know this case has struck a deep nerve -- here in Collin County and beyond," Willis said in a statement. "That's understandable. When something like this …

Here goes the bulls**t.
The murder trial ofKarmelo Anthonyofficially got underway this week in Collin County, Texas, but before opening statements even began, controversy erupted over the makeup of the jury. Anthony, now 19, is charged withfirst-degree murderin the April 2025 fatal stabbing of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf during a high school track meet in Frisco, Texas. Prosecutors allege that a dispute between the two teens over seating under a team tent escalated into violence when Anthony allegedly stabbed Metcalf in the chest with a pocketknife. Anthony has maintained that he acted in self-defense.
The highly publicized case has drawn national attention for more than a year, fueled in part by the racial dynamics surrounding the incident. Anthony is Black, while Metcalf was white, and both supporters and critics have debated the role race has played in public reaction to the case.

Multiple witnesses trashed Karmelo Anthony's claim that he acted in self-defense when he stabbed Austin Metcalf on the witness stand Friday.
Austin Metcalf's 17-year-old track teammate, who was instructed to not be identified by the judge, alleged that Anthony had pulled out a folding knife from his backpack and had it ready in his hands as Metcalf stood above him to shove him.
A female student said she heard Anthony tell Metcalf: 'If you wanted me to move, you would have to move me.'

A previous version of events told by the defense claimed that Anthony stabbed Metcalf in reaction of fear during the confrontation where Metcalf made the first physical contact.

MCKINNEY, Texas --A Texas teenager who fatally stabbed a 17-year-old track athlete from a rival team during a high school meet was convicted of murder Tuesday and sentenced to 35 years in prison in a trial that drew attention far beyond the booming Dallas suburb where they were students.
A jury rejected Karmelo Anthony's claims of self-defense during a confrontation with Austin Metcalf in stadium bleachers last year. Most people who testified were students who described a heated exchange over Anthony's refusal on a rainy spring day to leave a tent that belonged to Metcalf's team.
Anthony, now 19, did not testify at trial, and only his mother took the stand during the sentencing phase, telling jurors her son was sorry and asking for their mercy.
Notoriety about the case spread, in part, because of a flood of social media posts that amplified the killing in racial terms. Anthony is Black; Metcalf was white. Lawyers on both sides, however, told jurors that the tragedy had nothing to do with race.
Jurors, who deliberated for less than three hours, had the option of a lesser charge, manslaughter, but didn't choose it.…

was convicted of murder and sentenced to 35 years in prison on Tuesday in a case that drew wide attention beyond the booming Dallas suburb where they were students.
A jury rejected Karmelo Anthony’s claims of self-defense during a confrontation with Austin Metcalf in stadium bleachers last year. Most people who testified were students who described a heated exchange over Anthony’s refusal on a rainy spring day to leave a tent that belonged to Metcalf’s team.
Anthony, now 19,
