Russia closed railway checkpoints on borders with Finland, Estonia and ... According to the decision of the Russian authorities, the crossing points at Finland Station in St. Petersburg, as well as in Vyborg and Svetlogorsk in the Leningrad Oblast, Värtsilä and Lyuttya in Karelia, Pechory and Pytalovo in the Pskov Oblast cease operations. The latter two are located on the border with Estonia and Latvia. Railway station in Pytalovo, Pskov Oblast. Photo: Yandex.Maps However, over the past two years, only Pechory and Pytalovo among the listed railway crossing points were actually operational. The others were no longer in use, as railway communication between Russia and Finland had been suspended after Finnish authorities closed the border with Russia. Thus, the new decision primarily legally solidifies a situation that had already developed in practice, although for the points on the border with Estonia and Latvia, it means an official cessation of their operation.

Russia Closes Railway Border Crossings With Finland and Baltic ... July 1, 2026 Jack No1 (CC BY-SA 3.0) Russia has closed seven railway border checkpoints with Finland, Estonia and Latvia, according to a government decree published Tuesday. The suspension, which takes effect July 1, halts the movement of individuals, vehicles and cargo through the designated rail crossings. Five of the shuttered checkpoints are located on the Finnish border, while Estonia and Latvia each have one crossing affected. Officials have not disclosed the reasons for the closures or when the checkpoints might reopen. In Estonia, the Ivangorod freight and passenger crossing will remain open, and in Latvia, the Sebezh crossing will also stay open. However, the closures leave Finland with no open railway crossings with Russia, which normally exports fertilizer to Finland by rail. Finland shut its eastern vehicle and pedestrian border crossings with Russia indefinitely in December 2023 following an influx of asylum seekers. Helsinki claimed the influx was a so-called “hybrid attack” by the Kremlin in retribution for Finland joining NATO in April 2023. Read more about: Finland , Estonia , Latvia Sign up for ou…

Russia shuts railway border crossings with Finland, Estonia ... - POLITICO Russia on Wednesday shut down traffic through some of its last remaining railway border crossings with the European Union. The move, announced in a government order on Tuesday evening, suspends all movement of persons, vehicles, goods, and cargo by rail with Finland, Estonia and Latvia from July 1. The Foreign Ministry has formally notified the Baltic nations of the decision, but offered no explanation for the “temporary” closures, nor any indication of when they might be lifted. The affected checkpoints and crossings with Finland include St. Petersburg’s Finland Station, Vyborg and Svetogorsk in the Leningrad region, and Värtsilä and Lütta in Karelia. Pechory on the Estonian frontier and Pytalovo near Latvia are also closed. Advertisement Many of the Finnish railway crossings had already seen little or no passenger traffic since direct rail links between Finland and Russia were suspended following Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Finland then closed its entire eastern border in December 2023 over what it described as Russian-orchestrated “instrumentalized migration.” By contrast, the crossi…

(Carl Court/Getty Images) The Russian government is set to suspend traffic through several railway checkpoints on its borders with Finland, Estonia, and Latvia starting July 1, according to a government order. The order did not provide a reason for the closures. The statement, published on June 30, says Russia will "temporarily suspend" the movement of people, vehicles, goods, and cargo through selected railway crossings along sections of the Russian state border. The largest number of closures will affect the Finnish border, including the Vyborg, Vartsilya, Lyuttya, Saint Petersburg-Finlandsky, and Svetogorsk railway checkpoints. Rail traffic will also be halted at the Pechory-Pskov checkpoint on the Russian-Estonian border and at the Pytalovo checkpoint on the border with Latvia.
