Neeraj Chopra admits injury blunder at Worlds, reveals why he walked ...
A delayed start to the season, but Indian javelin star Neeraj Chopra is finally set to return to action at the Doha Diamond League on Friday. Ahead of his competitive comeback, Chopra opened up about what he now considers an injury-related mistake at the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo, admitting it was "not a good decision" to compete while carrying a back issue.
Chopra endured a disappointing campaign in Tokyo last September, finishing eighth with a best throw of 84.03m. He later revealed that he had been struggling with a lower back injury during the event, which subsequently required a lengthy recovery period and delayed the start of his 2026 season.
"I had some injury before the Tokyo World Championships. We worked a lot and still decided to compete there, but I don't think that was a good decision because I already knew I had a problem. But it was the last competition of 2025, so I decided to compete," the 28-year-old said.
"In an athlete's life, if there is one injury, you try to protect that area and then something else starts hurting. I had issues in my ankle, then somewhere in my shoulder. So I…

Hi and welcome to India Today's live coverage of Doha Diamond League 2026.
Rumesh Pathirage has emerged victorious in the men's javelin event, producing a stunning winning throw of 88.68m. Anderson Peters finished second with 86.38m, while USA's Curtis Thompson claimed third place with 85.99m.
It turned out to be a disappointing return to competition for Neeraj Chopra, who finished fourth with a best effort of 85.69m.
Despite recovering from an opening-round foul and crossing the Commonwealth Games qualification mark, the Indian star could not break into the top three on a day dominated by Pathirage's brilliance.
Disappointment for Neeraj Chopra. The Indian Olympic champion fouled his fifth attempt, meaning he remains outside the top three and will not be eligible for the sixth and final round of throws.
It brings an underwhelming end to his return to competition, with Neeraj currently sitting fourth on the leaderboard.
The only question now is whether he can hold on to that position or slip further down the standings as the remaining athletes complete their attempts.

Neeraj Chopra returned to competitive action with a 4th place finish at the 2026 Doha Diamond League on Friday. He threw a best of 85.69m.
It was an event that had few big throws, and the biggest came from current world lead and rising javelin superstar Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage of Sri Lanka, who hit a best of 88.68m in round 4 to win the Doha leg.
Behind him, and above Neeraj, came reigning World Championships silver medalist Anderson Peters who hit a best of 86.38m and reigning Worlds bronze medalist Curtis Thompson with a best of 85.99m
At a venue traditionally known for 90m+ throws (Neeraj's sole 90m+ throw came here last year, an event where he finished second behind Julian Weber), the throwers seemed to struggle for rhythm. Thompson led round 1, Anderson Peters rounds 2 and 3, before Pathirage took over in round 4.
Meanwhile, Neeraj started with a foul, before hitting a modest 82.77m to get his first mark. His best came in round 3, when he hit 85.69m and at the time that was good enough for third place. He followed that up with an 83.45m throw and as he looked to hunt down the top three, fouled o…

2-time Olympic medallist Neeraj Chopra is set to make a return to the javelin scene after spending almost a year away from professional competition. Neeraj, who has been recovering from a back injury, is set to make his return at the Doha Diamond League 2026, which will be held on June 19.
Neeraj last competed at the World Championships 2025 in Japan, where he failed to finish on the podium. Neeraj was knocked out early in the finals after finishing with a throw of 84.93m, which was the eighth-best effort in the 12-man field. Neeraj later revealed that he was dealing with a back injury, sustained just before the day of the final.
Between September 2025 and June 2026, Neeraj parted ways with his coach, legendary Jan Zelezny, and took control of his own training. Neeraj also ended his association with JSW Sports, who had managed him as a client since the very beginning of his javelin journey.
