Microsoftis set to join the long list of Big Tech companies announcing layoffs while investing heavily in artificial intelligence and trying to control costs. The Satya Nadella-led firm plans to cut under 2.5% of its workforce, according to a Business Insider report citing sources. Microsoft, for its part, has yet to publicly respond to the report.
The layoffs report surfaced about a month after Asha Sharma, the new CEO of Microsoft’s Xbox gaming division, sent a memo to employeessignalling a “reset”for the business.
Although this particular round of layoffs, set to be announced next week, will be considerably smaller than previous job cuts, it is still expected to impact thousands of employees, according to Business Insider.

REDMOND, Wash. (KOMO) —Microsoft will eliminate 4,800 roles—about 2.1% of its total workforce worldwide—according to ablog post on the company's website.
Executive Vice President and Chief People Officer Amy Coleman wrote Monday that Microsoft "is changing because the world around it is changing."
While Coleman said the roles will not be replaced by artificial intelligence, she acknowledged that AI played a role in the decision.
"Some of the tasks we do every day can now be automated," Coleman wrote. "And that means we all need to keep learning, keep building new skills, and keep adapting as the work evolves."
Microsoft announced in April that it planned tooffer voluntary buyouts to nearly 9,000 employees, or 7% of its American workforce.
The buyouts from earlier this year and the new round of layoffs are part of an industry trend of workforce consolidation amid the rise of AI. Other companies like Meta and Oracle announced sudden layoffs in the past year as well.
Coleman said the changes "mostly fall within our Commercial and XBOX organizations."
Coleman said the tech giant has "redeployed more than 4,000 employees…

Microsoft MSFT.O said on Monday it would cut 4,800 jobs, or about 2.1% of its global workforce, overhauling its Xbox gaming business and divesting up to five studios as it looks to boost returns after years of heavy investment in the division.
The restructuring of its gaming division will involve 3,200 job cuts, including laying off 1,600 employees on Monday.
Despite spending tens of billions of dollars to expand Xbox, including its blockbuster acquisition of Activision Blizzard, Microsoft has struggled to narrow the gap with Sony's PlayStation, and Nintendo, prompting a broader rethink of the gaming business.
The company has increasingly shifted its strategy toward distributing its games across more platforms rather than relying on console-exclusive titles to drive Xbox hardware sales.
The Xbox restructuring will involve divestment of four studios, Xbox's new head, Asha Sharma, said in a note to employees.

Microsoft May Lay Off More Employees Next Month: Here's Who's At Risk
Microsoft might be heading for another round of layoffs as early as May. Reports suggest the tech giant is planning internal restructuring, with a focus on reducing the number of middle managers and boosting the ratio of engineers to non-technical staff. The move appears to be part of a larger effort to improve efficiency by ensuring more people are directly involved in building products.
Restructuring Managerial Roles
According to sources cited by Business Insider, Microsoft leaders are closely reviewing teams where there are more program or product managers than actual software developers. The aim is to strike a better balance and cut down on excessive layers of management. This shift would allow one manager to handle a larger group of employees, a concept known as increasing the “span of control.” Fewer managers could also open up budget and space for hiring more engineers.

This restructuring push is especially visible in Microsoft’s security division, led by Charlie Bell, a former Amazon executive. He is reportedly introducing a model from Amazon known as the “builder ratio…

Microsoft to Lay Off 4,800 Employees Amid Massive AI Investment
Microsoft
is laying off around 4,800 employees, or roughly 2.1% of its global workforce, becoming the latest major technology company to trim jobs while ramping up investments in artificial intelligence (AI).
The job cuts come at a time when large technology companies are investing record amounts of money into artificial intelligence infrastructure. Global spending on artificial intelligence in the industry is predicted to reach $700 billion by the year 2026 and therefore companies are under pressure to enhance profitability while at the same time carrying out huge investments in data centers and modern computing. In fact, ultra-modern computing include chips that are specially designed for artificial intelligence.
Microsoft made the announcement regarding the staff cuts on Monday following a disappointing first half of the year, in which its share price fell almost 23%, its worst first half since 2022.

July 6 (Reuters) - Microsoft is cutting about 2.1% of its workforce, or roughly 4,800 jobs, as the Windows maker restructures parts of its commercial and Xbox businesses, joining other tech titans in a wave of layoffs as they shift investments towards AI infrastructure.
The company's shares were down 1.5% in early trading.
Big Tech's historic AI outlays, set to top $700 billion this year, are piling pressure on companies to show returns from the technology and offset the rising cost of rolling it out across their businesses. Amazon and Meta Platforms have also laid off thousands of employees this year.
In a memo to employees, Chief People Officer Amy Coleman said AI was changing how work gets done by automating some routine tasks, but said the layoffs were part of a broader effort to realign resources and operating structures with the company's priorities.
"I also want to be direct that the roles eliminated today are not being replaced by AI. At the same time, what is true is that AI is changing how work gets done."
