WASHINGTON, D.C. — In a strongly worded letter to the head of Michigan's National Guard, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer reiterated troops from her state are only to be used for operations surrounding America 250 celebrations in Washington, D.C., and not for President Trump's long-running — and controversial — joint task force to fight crime. She said that she would pull her troops from the city if that is not the case, in the letter obtained by NPR.
"Please take all necessary measures to ensure the Michigan National Guard is only supporting the narrow and limited America 250 Mission and is in no way supporting the D.C. Safe and Beautiful Mission," wrote Gov. Whitmer, referencing the official name for the federal task force.

WASHINGTON (AP) — ANational Guard deploymentto Washington, D.C. has ballooned during the celebrations of the country's 250th anniversary of independence, bolstered in part by contingents from Democratic-led states.
That participation has sparked anger among some in the nation's capital who argue the troops from Democratic-led states are not just there toassist in securing the festivitiesbut are being drawn into the Trump administration's ongoing, open-ended Guard deployment to the city.
A contingent from Minnesota sent for the 250th is set to depart early. On Tuesday, a coalition of think tanks, civic, labor and civil rights groups asked Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer to withdraw the state's National Guard forces, saying they have been misused.
“Previous presidents have requested assistance from out-of-state Guard forces during major events in D.C., and such requests would normally give little cause for concern," the groups said in a letter. "Bu…

WASHINGTON — Gov. Gretchen Whitmer wants to ensure that the 160 members of the Michigan Army National Guard that she deployed to Washington, D.C., this month are helping to support the celebrations around the country's 250th birthday and not President Donald Trump's effort to fight crime and beautify the capital city.
In a
letter
Monday to the head of the Michigan National Guard, Whitmer noted she has not "and will not" deploy troops to assist with Trump's so-called Safe and Beautiful Mission that has drawn criticism from local residents and leaders.
Whitmer is seeking assurances from Maj. Gen. Paul D. Rogers, who commands the Michigan National Guard, that the 170 uniformed members that she approved to help with the America 250 celebrations through Aug. 31 are only supporting the "narrow and limited" America 250 Mission and not the controversial D.C. law enforcement mission that dates to last August.
