The United Nations’ climate agency has warned of an increased risk of extreme weather in the coming weeks and months due to the emerging El Nino weather pattern.
The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) issued the alert in a news release on Tuesday, saying that there was an 80 percent chance of an El Nino event – marked by unusually warm sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean- between June and August and a roughly 90 percent chance of it forming by November.

“The science is clear: El Nino is arriving on our doorstep in the coming months with 90 percent certainty,” said UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in a video statement. “The world must treat it as the urgent climate warning it is.”

El Niño is coming, and the world's top climate authority is urging governments to brace for the fallout.
The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) issued a climate advisory this week warning that the powerful Pacific Ocean pattern is officially developing and poised to disrupt global weather over the coming months, driving up temperatures and raising the risk of drought, heavy rainfall and heat waves around the world.
The tone from the top was urgent.
"El Niño is arriving on our doorstep in the coming months with 90% certainty," United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres warned in a video statement. "El Niño conditions will pour fuel on the fire of a warming world. Impacts will hit even harder, travel even farther and cross borders with devastating speed."

The World Meteorological Organization is now forecasting an 80% likelihood of an El Niño event developing between now and August.
—
A weather pattern fueled by warming ocean waters and typically associated with increased global temperatures and erratic weather patterns could arrive as early as this month, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has warned.
The UN agency is now forecasting an 80% likelihood of an El Niño event developing between now and August, with a 90% likelihood that it will persist until at least November.
The global climatic phenomenon, which occurs every two to seven years on average, is fueled by warming of sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean. Temperatures in the tropical Pacific are currently exceeding 6C above average, according to the WMO.
When this oceanic warming takes place, the traditional east-to-west trade winds weaken or collapse entirely. This atmospheric shift traps a massive reservoir of warm water and air in the central and eastern Pacific, temporarily disrupting global weather patterns and raising global average temper…

The Secretary General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, says the world must treat the new phase of the weather pattern, El Niño, as an urgent climate warning. He said it would pour fuel on the fire of a warming globe. The World Meteorological Organisation says preparations are needed for a potentially strong El Niño event with an eighty percent chance of conditions developing in the next few months. Also: Israeli forces have continued hitting targets in southern Lebanon after an agreement backed by President Trump stopped them from striking the capital, Beirut. Two people have died in Kenya during protests against plans to establish a US-backed Ebola isolation centre. A British man could become the first astronaut with a disability to live and work in space; and Tom Hanks and Tim Allen are back as Woody and Buzz in Toy Story 5, as they try to make sense of a world dominated by technology.

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO), an agency of theUnited Nations, warned on Tuesday that the impending El Niño will increase the risk of extreme weather over the coming months.
In an update titled Prepare forEl Niño, the WMO said the certainty of El Niño development—an ocean-atmosphere phenomenon where surface water along the equatorial and central Pacific Ocean remains warmer than usual—during June-August was now 80 per cent. The phenomenon will influence global temperature and rainfall.
An El Niño event can last from a few months to up to two years and usually peaks during the winter months.
Like forests, oceans are great heat sinks. But when the heating is excessive, it does more harm than good. One of the primary drivers, the WMO said, for this warming trend was the feeding of unusually warm subsurface conditions across the tropical Pacific Ocean.
“The temperatures exceeding 6 degrees Celsius above average were providing a substantial reservoir of heat, which is resulting in the observed surface warming,” the WMO said.
In his message to the world on the developing El Niño and its possible…

The waters of the Pacific Ocean are getting extremely warm, and that could provide fuel for an immensely destructive climate event that is unlike anything we have ever seen before
. Even the United Nations has issued an ominous warning about the El Niño event that is in the long-term forecast, because it will have a dramatic impact on every man, woman, and child on the entire planet.
We are being told that there is more than an 80 percent chance that El Niño conditions will arrive by the end of next month due to rapidly warming equatorial waters in the Pacific.
Meanwhile, an unprecedented "9,000-mile marine heatwave" has developed in the North Pacific. Many experts are concerned that the confluence of those two factors could produce a "Godzilla El Niño"...

El Niño is officially under way, according to a new update by U.S. scientists, and chances of it intensifying into one of the strongest the country has ever witnessed have soared.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has upgraded the U.S. El Niño status from “watch” to an “advisory” in its monthly release published on Thursday, reporting above-average sea surface temperatures across the central to eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean over the past month.
“There is a 63 percent chance of a very strong El Niño during November-January that would rank among the largest El Niño events in the historical record going back to 1950,” the release reads.

The United Nations has warned that the world must prepare for the likely return of El Niño, a powerful climate pattern that can intensify extreme weather events and push global temperatures higher.
The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said there is an 80% probability that El Niño conditions will develop before September and a 90% chance that the phenomenon will persist through November.
According to the UN weather agency, most climate models indicate that the upcoming El Niño event will be at least moderate in strength and could become strong.
Some scientists have suggested it may rank among the most powerful El Niño episodes of the century.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres urged governments to treat the development as a serious warning about the growing risks posed by climate change.
