French artist JR's project will transform Paris' oldest bridge into a giant cave
In June, French artist JR plans to turn Paris’ oldest bridge, Pont Neuf, into a walk-through “cave” — a temporary, monumental public artwork that will cover the stone arches with a rocky illusion and invite visitors to cross the Seine inside a tunnel of air, sound and optional augmented reality. The 17th-century Pont Neuf bridge is a familiar landmark spanning the River Seine, but was left almost unrecognisable to Parisians on Thursday.
Titled ‘La Caverne’ or ‘the cave’, it was created by French artist Jene-René – better known by his pseudonym JR. It’s the latest in a series of large scale art installations across the city, measuring 120m in length and ranging from 12-18m in height.
Speaking to AP News, JR said he wanted the piece, which opens to the public on 6 June, to “juxtapose the rough and the wild with the refined elegance of Paris”.
“There’s also a kind of unknown,” he added, “of fear, of entering into a cave – and at the same time, a fascination.”
The installation, once opened, will run until 28 June.

Paris’ oldest bridge has vanished. This week, the artist known as the “French Banksy,” JR, inflated a giant “cave” over the Pont Neuf — a monumental, rocky illusion swallowing the 17th-century landmark whole. (AP video by Alexander Turnbull and Nicolas Garriga)
PARIS (AP) — The oldest bridge in Paris looked Thursday as if it had been swallowed by a mountain.
The transformation is the work of JR, the street artist known as the “French Banksy,” who this week beganinflating a giant artificial “cave”over the Pont Neuf, turning the 17th-century bridge that has carried Parisians across the Seine for more than 400 years into a rocky illusion rising over the river.
JR has said the idea ofLa Caverne du Pont Neufis to bring “mineral and nature” back to the heart of the city. He says he is not covering the bridge so much as revealing the stone taken from limestone quarries from which Paris itself was cut.

La Caverne du Pont-Neuf: JR's giant installation finally open to the public
The Pont Neuf Cavefinally steps out of the shadows. Signed byJR,thismonumental installationturns Paris’s oldest bridge into an urban cave, a dark, mineral passage where printed matter, subtle sounds, fleeting scents and a few augmented‑reality experiences mingle. After several days of repairs, the workopens to the public this Monday, June 15and is to be discoveredfor free, 24/7,until June 28, 2026.
This cave has its own odyssey to tell, long before any visitor steps inside. Intense heat waves, temperatures hovering around 3 degrees, rain, gusty winds and even hail tested the setup to the limit. The outer canvas tore, the inflatable envelope was damaged, and the teams had to fix the installation right there in front of spectators. “It isn’t controlled the way it is in a museum or a gallery; here you’re in real life, facing the elements,” says JR at the opening.
This scar has now become part of the work. Set in the heart of Paris, exposed to wind, rain, and the gaze and reactions of onlookers, the Pont Neuf Cave inevitably recalls the Christo and Jeanne-Claude saga, whose The Pont Neuf Wrapped wrapped the …

Pont Neuf Transformed Into Giant Cave By JR And Daft Punk
A massive inflatable cave installation by artist JR and Daft Punk’s Thomas Bangalter envelops Paris’s oldest bridge, blending history, technology, and spectacle for three weeks this June.
On May 21, 2026, Parisians and tourists alike awoke to a startling new sight along the banks of the Seine. The city’s oldest bridge, the storied Pont Neuf, had all but vanished beneath a monumental, surreal transformation. In its place stood what appeared to be a colossal Alpine cave, its rocky contours rendered in shades of white, grey, and black, swallowing the 17th-century landmark in an illusion that seemed to defy both time and place. The mastermind behind this spectacle is JR, the enigmatic French street artist often dubbed the “French Banksy,” whose penchant for ambitious public art has drawn international attention for years.
JR’s latest work, titled “La Caverne du Pont Neuf” (“The Pont Neuf Cave”), is not just a feat of artistic bravado but a heartfelt tribute to Christo and Jeanne-Claude, the legendary duo who wrapped the Pont Neuf in fabric bac…

For centuries, Paris has inspired artists to reinterpret its streets, monuments, and mythology. Few landmarks embody the city’s layered history more completely than the Pont Neuf, the oldest standing bridge across the Seine. Now, four decades after Christo and Jeanne-Claude famously wrapped the bridge in shimmering fabric, French artist
JR
has returned to the site with a project that does something equally audacious—but in a radically different way.
Instead of covering the bridge, JR appears to split it open.

His monumental installation,

, transforms the elegant 17th-century structure into a colossal walk-through cave, inviting visitors to step inside a fictional geological world hidden beneath one of Paris’s most recognizable monuments. Part sculpture, part architectural intervention, part immersive spectacle, the project demonstrates how contemporary public art can reshape not only what we see, but how we understand history itself.

A striking timelapse video has captured the inflation of a colossal cave-like structure on one of Paris’s most iconic bridges, showcasing the ambitious public art installation by renowned French artist JR.
The monumental artwork was created on the Pont de l’Alma bridge in the French capital, where JR, often compared to British street artist Banksy for his large-scale public interventions, orchestrated the gradual inflation of the massive structure. The timelapse footage reveals the dramatic transformation as the inflatable sculpture grew to dominate the bridge’s landscape, attracting considerable attention from passersby and art enthusiasts.
The Artist Behind the Installation
JR has built an international reputation for his bold, large-scale public art projects that blend street art with contemporary installation techniques. Often described as the French equivalent of Banksy, the acclaimed artist is known for p…
